Neville, who holds UEFA A and B Coaching Licences, has signed a four year contract with The FA,.

During a successful playing career he made 85 England appearances, while winning every domestic honour with Manchester United, and the UEFA Champions League.

He represented England at Euro 96, Euro 2000, Euro 2004, World Cup 98 and World Cup 2006.

After retiring in 2010-11, he has been widely acclaimed for his football analysis during his first season working for Sky Sports.

Gary will join Coach Ray Lewington and Goalkeeper Coaches Ray Clemence and Dave Watson in Hodgson's coaching staff at the European Championship.

The England Manager said: "Gary has achieved so much in the game as a player with Manchester United and England.

"He has obtained UEFA coaching qualifications and will be tremendously respected by the players because of his vast experience as a player.

"At my first meeting with The FA, I explained that Gary was someone I wanted as part of my staff. I think it is very important we have a younger coach who knows the dressing room and is very experienced at international level.

"That he has represented England as a player at five major finals tournaments will make him an invaluable member of staff."

Gary Neville added: "Roy asking me to be a part of his staff and to work with the national team is not only an honour but a very special moment for me.

"I had absolutely no hesitation in accepting this role and I am relishing the opportunity to work alongside Roy and the team at the Euros and through to the next two tournaments" - [url=http://www.thefa.com/England/News/2012/neville-appointed-to-coaching-staff-140512.aspx]http://www.thefa.com...aff-140512.aspx

He did his coaching badges with a lad from Uttox who is on the Port Vale youth coaching staff a few years ago and was a top bloke apparently.

Giggs was on the same course and he and Neville were really sound and down to earth considering they are multi-millionaires.

Good appointment and Roy deserves credit for bringing him in.

Still glad Citeh won the League tho...its been great at work today..... 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Has been employed on his playing career, now I'm against this as I think there are hundreds of top quality coaches in the leagues who work damn hard on perfecting their profession and it must be disheartening to see a player with no coaching experience jump straight in a head of them, on the basis that he had a terrific playing career.

I had a friend who tried to argue that punditry and coaching is two in the same thing, it really isn't.. the coaching badges should take you so far, the rest you have to work on and he hasn't done that. I like Nev don't get me wrong but just think it's a unjust appointment that doesn't benefit us, but more of a PR stunt.

I accept what you say about his lack of coaching experience but I don't believe that his appointment was just on the back of a 'terrific playing career'. Roy Hodgson said that he wanted someone in that position who had a recent playing career and Neville fits the bill. The character of the man and the respect that he has from current players is going to be an important factor, as is his ability to put over clearly what is required by the manager. Roy Hodgson is a strong character and he most definitely would not want a 'yes man' in the Neville role and nobody could accuse Gary Neville of being that.

Personally, I think Hodgson is building himself a good back-room team. Ray Lewington knows how Hodgson works and Neville has great experience of playing for England at Major tournaments. It is a fresh start for England.
