Stimacked
Just read that Watford Palace Middlsboro along with Prem bound Reading and Saints and Prem wannabees West Ham are the only Champ clubs aiming for Catagory 1 status in the Elite Performance Academy whatjamicallit coming in next year. Think it stinks that our owners are bigging up our Academy when we are going to be left behind by the likes of Palace and Watford. They have obviously budgeted for bigger better Academy set ups than our owners. Seems nobody batted an eyelid when the club announced we were going for tier two. Ipswich fans were furious about their clubs decision.
duncanjwitham
It costs something like an extra £1m a year between tier 2 and tier 1, so shall we take that from the wage budget or the transfer budget? We won't be 'left behind' - you won't automatically get better players out of an academy because they're are a higher tier, it's still fundamentally down to your youth recruitment and development (which we seem to be doing very well at, at the moment). alexxxxx
i think the way forward for championship clubs like derby atm is a competitive academy. moneymaker.
SawleyRam
I suppose it depends on how robust the tier system is, lots of these "standards" are actually window dressing. I don't see why this stops us producing top quality players?
randombc
You can't poach players from tiers below you, you can poach whichever players you like, so a tier 2 club can get a player from tier 1, and three premiership teams have applied for tier 2 category. What Derby are aiming to do is to show young players that you will get a chance if you are good enough and put the work in, and this will attract more players to come to us, and in effect allow more players to stay with us, then having to sit on the bench like Rose is having to do at Tottenham at the age of 21, when he should really be playing regularly. Derby are tying players down from as young as 14 to professional contracts, to stop other teams coming in and taking them for minimal compensation, which is like 100k for every year they are with you, and putting us in a position, where we can command whatever fee we like. So chill out, all is well 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
networker1884
Oooh, so our 3 part plan is currently 0% incomplete. Premiership...nope. Worldwide brand...nope. Infact worse of than in 2006. Academy...nope. Really, we've been told the reason we're not investing in our playing staff is because we're focussing on the academy. If we're not going to pay the extra £1m a season for a grade 1 academy, surely that money is going into the transfer kitty? Either that or they're lying to us! No. Unheard of! McRamFan
All the teams mentioned cover a greater density of the population as well, so it makes more sense for them to be tier 1.

p.shilton
the whole tier system is a joke- more ways to squeeze money- our academy is doing just fine, if we continue to produce a couple of players a year that can make the grade then who cares what "grade" we are at? Tell em to stick it

sage
On the subject of academies, Forests under 17 and under 18s academy last year had 20 players, three of them were from Derby, one from South Normanton and one from Burton-on-Trent. Anyone know if this is a deliberate policy by Forest's scouting system to target Derby supporting areas and do we reciprocate. [url=http://www.nottinghamforest.co.uk/page/AcademyNews/0,,10308~2568837,00.html]http://www.nottingha...2568837,00.html I taught and coached the South Normanton lad. That's two lads I've coached who have got pro contracts. Him and Lee Holmes. Unfortunately i coached them at cricket not football. He was a good lad and i'm glad he's made it this far. he used to come to my summer playschemes. p.s. South Normanton is 70/30 Derby/Forest. Ambitious
In fairness, consistency in what the board are wanting to do should state that they are going for catagory one. I feel that sometimes they bend truths to shy away from the fundamental fact they don't want to pile in a load of wonga, its a mystery how they can preach so vocally about wanting a strong academy, vote in favour of this quite frankly horrible regulation and then not try and put ourselves in the best possible position when it comes to it. They have money in the bank, fair enough if they don't want to waste a load of cash on players on long deals and all that ********, however this could set us up for the next 10 years as a club, but as people have said it's a bit more money and my gut instinct is that they just don't want to part with it. PBW Ram
I read somewhere that to have category one academy status the club would need to employ 18 full time coaches. That could raise some valid reasons as to why we wont go that route. 1) maybe we want to focus on quality and not quantity. 2) maybe the club have a team they trust now and dont feel the need to bring more coaches in. 3) could you imagine this bloody forum if th club did hire 18 coaches, christ it's bad enough already that crosby, garner and taylor get stick for doing sod all... we all know it's only Johnny Metgod who is holding us together... surely 18 coaches would only be jobs for the boys again.....(insert sarcastic wink) There seems to be a healthy flow of promising young lads coming through, I don't care if we're cat 1 or cat 2 as long as we get two gems a year ready to step up. It's fairly obvious, is it not? Everything the board have put in place has been about getting value for money. If they feel the added expense of a tier 1 over a tier 2 is not going to justify itself in terms of getting better players through, then it's not worth doing. We'd effectivly be wasting £1m a year on a 'prestige' thing, which could be much better spent elsewhere.
