uttoxram75
For a short period of time you would struggle to see have seen a better player than Jeff Chandler. Trevor Hebberd came close mind......
Ambitious
Being the best isn't always about winning competitions either, Messi and Ronaldo are incredible players... I think if you put either of them in the same league as pele at the same time, they would do much better. fact is football now is much better in terms of quality and fitness and everything else, pele, best, maradona...etc all were above and beyond their generation just like Ronaldo and Messi are above and beyond their generation. football has improved vastly. Football has really improved. I can still remember how those old footballs started to feel like when they got wet. They got so heavy it felt like hitting your head to a wall when you tried a header. They were pretty awful to handle in the ground also. So glad they are gone now.
ramexpat
for me you cant compare Messi to Pele, yes Pele was fantastic but it was a different game back then, its alot more faster today and alot more competitive, could Pele actually be as good in todays game ? Pele was kicked out of the 1962 World Cup, he'd get a lot more protection now so its possible he would have scored even more goals playing today. Impossible to say who's better though. You can only be the best of your generation - Messi is certainly that.

Duracell
This argument annoys me. Pele scored that many goals for Santos, f*cking Santos, not Benfica, or Real Madrid or Juventus (the big teams of the time). Secondly, his record for Brazil was fantastic, but the players who surrounded him in the 1970 WC team for example, were amazing too, so it just accentuated his talents. Messi doesn't have that luxury unfortunately, Argentina are too weak at the back to ever be a major world threat at the moment IMO. Thirdly, Cruyff, Best, Platini etc didn't win a WC, are they not even allowed to be considered the best ever? Messi & Maradona &--#62; The rest. But equally, Messi is supported by a decent team in Barca and that must excel his talent as well. Messi also plays badly for Argentina because he doesn't do so well on South America's rougher pitches. Pele could play on anything. The World Cup point is that Messi is yet to shine in a World Cup. He doesn't have to win one - but it would be nice for him to dominate a game. He struggled against Nigeria and such like in South Africa.

Pearl Ram
He needs to do it at International level, as in, at the World Cup, ... So that rules Best out of being considered a great. Man, you don't half type some tripe. And remind me, exactly when did Cruyff win the world cup for Holland, oh no, he didn't, so he can't have been a great either. Bris Vegas
Messi's individual talent outweighs any other player that has lived... You don't score 54 goals in 45 games if you aren't special.. (and that's against the best, not feckin Brazilian teams who can't defend for **** and when the offside rule basically wasn't invented) Pele's achievement was monumental for his goals.. But his words 'he needs to win a world cup' just shows that he knows Messi has him done hands down.. We're talking about individual talent, not the team.. So it doesn't matter where you come from, you're judged on individual talent.. He has everything to his game, and at a notch higher than anyone else.. Maradonna ran from the halfwayline to score an amazing goal.. Once.. Messi has done it numerous times, he's won world player of the year 3 times in a row beating off other greats such as Xavi and Ronaldo by record points margins.. You watch him play and it's like a computer game, his first touch, movement and dribbling is so immaculate that there isn't a single position on the field where he isn't a threat.. Put Pele and Messi at LB and who would have the better effect? You can only stop Messi in one way, and that's to foul him.. You should see some of the fouls he's had to injure aswell, they go on about being in the olden days where you could just kick the opposition.. You should check videos of Sergio Ramos and Ujfalusi (Atletico Madrid) they were horrific challenges aimed at putting him out the game nothing else.. Yeh I'm sure Pele used to recieve some of those against Brazilians who were too busy bombing up the other end of the field and leaving huge gaps at the back.. Totally agree Bris, especially about some the challenges that messi has been on the end of, or could have been if he hadn't just skipped past them, he is does things with a football that is unbelievable, his control, pace, skill and most importantly, his composure are all phenomenal!!
