uttoxram75
Widely played? Not really it's behind most of our other sports. Sure plenty of people play it but all of our best athletes go into football or basketball because that is the familiar path to riches and success in sports here. Literally it's hard to play unless your a rich kid from the suburbs. Their is very few small towns that actually play it throughout the country(infact I only know of about 5 that play it within 60 miles of my hometown), it's mainly a suburban sport for white kids. That might change soon, but it hasn't yet. On our football. I mean it's a different sport, but I wouldn't call those guys out of shape. Their are some big freakish athletes in that sport. It's not exactly as easy as Europeans seem to think, I should know since I grew up playing it and I have played a bit of "soccer" in my day. You are very close to a life ban, your IP address handed over to the SAS so they can hunt you down and assassinate you, not to mention extreme ridicule, for the use of the word "soccer". It doesn't exist in the english language. Soccer is, if we are being correct about it, an English word, it was formed by the posh blokes playing Association Football back in the day, so, it is actually a pefectly correct name for the beautiful game....as for football meaning rugby to a welshman....well..just look at some of their players.... p.shilton
I like to think of Zidane as an honorary American, because headbutting an Italian dude for talking smack in a World Cup final is about as American as it gets... http://badassoftheweek.com/zidane-big http://badassoftheweek.com/zidane-deathstar Not quite- an American has never been near a world cup final! Someday you will rue that remark, when the US wins several in a row and it's still only like our 5th most popular sport. Oh how the world will rue it for all their mocking slander. blackNwhites
Is that before or after America swallows itself whole? Then there will be no suburban kids playing soccer, soccer will be a hustling game to make food. Everybody knows that's how ya make the best players. You'll probably be world champions then, but not before. Why do they call American football, football? You hardly ever use your foot, our Football (I've been using soccer as a reason for translation, but now you've learned it proper) is the only bona fide sport that is predominantly foot - ball. Plus the ball is a ball, not an egg.

Plus the ball is a ball, not an egg. Considering the obesity problem in America, I would assume we're already starting to swallow ourselves whole in a sense. Shrugs, who can really say why? It has it's roots in Rugby and association football. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense but that's what we call it. I struggle with the whole football/soccer word thing, since I've grown up all my life calling it soccer. As for kids hustling by playing soccer, you could argue it's already kinda happening in the southwest and other places where recent immigrant populations are high. I think the day the rich, white snobby hold on soccer(or football rather)loosens and we start tapping in to that will be the day the game here makes a drastic improvement. The problem is as of now, that mostly you need money to play and actually be noticed at camps and such. I mean most of the MLS talent in America is a bunch of college kids from rich private schools. In America the notion that you play sports at the collegiate level first than make the jump to the pros is still a vital part of it. MLS has not quite got the whole idea of finding young teenage talent down. Particularly finding poor, scrappy, genius footballers from the sons of South America and Africa who've immigrated here. It also doesn't help that U.S. coaches in any sport have always favored the biggest, strongest, tallest most athletic players they can find while the little runts don't get the attention. Leads to boring football because game IQ matters less. Luckily it seems the "soccer" establishment is starting to understand that now that Americans know Messi as an almost household name now. Unlucky! Luigi, Super Mario, Mussolini, Caesar, Ferrari, Pinocchio, Michelangelo, Tony Soprano, that guy of the Go Compare adverts, your guys took one hell of a beating! lol
