Ellington will go back to Watford

Nathan Ellington is not part of Derby County’s plans for next season.

The 27-year-old has been on a season-long loan with the Rams but will be returning to Watford or joining another club.

Ellington was signed by former Rams manager Paul Jewell with a view to a free transfer this summer.

A complex deal saw Watford receive a £1.5m loan fee for season.

But the player has struggled to make an impact at Pride Park.

His 32 appearances have included 18 starts and he has played only twice as a substitute since Nigel Clough replaced Jewell in January.

He scored nine goals and six of them helped Derby reach the semi-finals of the Carling Cup.

Watford boss Brendan Rodgers has already said Ellington does not figure in his plans.

The player has two years left on his contract at Vicarage Road and is one of their top wage earners.

Ellington joined the Hornets in August 2007 on a four-year deal.

He cost a club record £3.25m with the fee rising to £4.25m depending on appearances but in 34 Championship appearances, he has only managed 18 starts and four goals.

All five players who have been on loan at Derby will return to their clubs. The other four are Przemyslaw Kazmierczak, Nacer Barazite, John Eustace and Barry Bannan.

What a cock up of a deal, we paid £1.5m to have Ellington sat on his arse in Derby for a season, not one of Jewell's better ideas was it. Why wasn't it a 250k loan fee with the option to sign him for £1.25m, Watford must have been laughing all the way to the bank.

Watford waiting on definite answer from Derby County over striker

11:20am Saturday 16th May 2009

Nathan Ellington may still not return to Watford despite Derby County manager Nigel Clough confirming the striker has no future at Pride Park.

The Rams former boss Paul Jewell paid a £1.5m loan fee for Ellington at the beginning of the season with a view to signing the 27-year-old for a free transfer this summer.

Ellington has failed to impress Clough though, since his arrival in January and says the striker has no future at the club.

However, Watford chief executive Julian Winter has not had a definitive answer from Derby on whether they want to keep Ellington.

The Watford Observer understands the Rams have until the beginning of June to make their decision on the striker and if they can find a buyer, may yet retain his services.

Winter said: “We haven’t had a definitive answer from Derby. If he does come back then we will deal with it as and when we have to.

These transfer rumours are worse than a soap opera

Watford gaffer Brendan Rodgers has only gone and opened the rumour mongering floodgates by insisting that potential suitors are reportedly starting to circle around misfit Nathan Ellington.

The Hornets manager merely told the W`Observer that "apparently there are one or two offers on the table for Nathan so his future will be elsewhere" and already the speculation has started.

There`s a pretty strong rumour doing the rounds that he`s on his way out of the Watford wilderness to enjoy the delights on offer at Stadium:MK (presumably fuelled by stories on TalkSport AND the Daily Star) but he`d need to take a pay cut to join the Dons in League One.

Elsewhere, and Cardiff are the latest side to be linked - this time a £1m move to South Wales and a 3 year contract has been spouted about a bit of late. It could happen as soon as June 1st if you believe everything you read.

And if that wasn`t enough then Leicester are another name popping up with plenty of nonsense about Nigel Pearson knowing Ellington from his days as a backroom boy at West Brom.

Surely if Pearson was in the know after his Hawthorns experience then he`d be best placed not to make Duke his key signing for the Foxes fight in the Championship next season.

What is clear however is that no-one actually has any idea what the state of play with Ellington is these days (and nor do we care as long as he is off the wage bill).

I had high hopes for Ellington in fact I thought he would score more goals than Hulse, maybe thats why I sell Guppies and I'm not a football manager. I think he'l go on to do well whoever he joins next and you can guarentee he'l score against us.
