ladyram
I can't imagine for a second that the press would hound them if they actually 'came out'. Like Asanovic said though, an 'in the closet' gay would be front page news if he was suddenly photographed humping another man over the bonnet of a vauxhall vectra. It's the chanting in the stands that would be merciless / need to be stamped out very quickly (like it WASN'T for Graeme Le Saux, who got years of grief for simply reading the Guardian, and enjoying a spritzer). It's clearly not natural anyway, you can't insert a sausage into another sausage. I think the press would - absolutley. Look how the Sun went to town on that cabinet minister, a couple of years ago it was. They did a poll on wether gay people should be allowed into the cabinet. I remember at the time that another paper released details of his expenses at the same time they revealed his sexual orientation. But why? Does the fact that he's gay in any way obstruct him from doing his job? No. IMO the press still posess a prehistoric attitude to homosexuality that the general public is slowly but surely getting rid of. As for the fans chanting at a match, it would be intolerable. Max Clifford revealed a while ago now that he knows 6 gay footballers but won't reveal their names for obvious reasons. They don't stand a chance in the media spotlight and that's why a gay footballer is seldom heard of.
