vicky-27 Posted May 5, 2009 Share Posted May 5, 2009 Nigel Clough has revealed that the number of players Derby County are looking to move on this summer could be as high as 17. Without going into names, the Rams manager has said players will be made available for transfer and others released. Clough has always said the squad he inherited from former boss Paul Jewell is top-heavy and would be cut in size before next season. Derby had already used 34 players when Clough arrived from Burton Albion in January and finished the season having used 39 – equalling a club record. “That’s exactly the number in the squad when we arrived – so they’ve all had a game now!†said Clough. "You can’t get a settled side or a settled spirit, or anything like that by using so many players. “We would hope that would be down to 20 to 24 next season.†Claude Davis, Roy Carroll, Jordan Stewart, Martin Albrechtsen and Mile Sterjovski are believed to be among those available for transfer. Clough has been in charge for 24 games – 20 in the Championship and four cup ties – and knows the players he wants to keep as he plans for next season. He has talked to all the players individually, apart from those currently out on loan, and told them where they stand. “After three and a half months, we’ve seen enough to form opinions on who we want around for next season,†said Clough, who feels one advantage of being in charge for the past few months is that he has had time to make decisions on players. “We have got a big squad but I think the lads have shown that the nucleus we have is OK and can compete at this level,†added Clough. "So, if we can add some players to help them along and get a few fit again, we should be OK. "If you look at who was sitting on the sidelines at Watford on Sunday – the likes of Miles Addison, Paul Green, Chris Porter, Jay McEveley and Dean Leacock – we would hope that all of those are challenging for a place along with the ohers we bring in. “One of the biggest things will be to get the injured players back for the start of next season.†Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
