What a waste of money Europe!!

There's a new space project happening in the next few years, to send a spacecraft up to study the sun, at a cost of approx a billion euros.

Does anybody else think that this is an obscene amount of money wasted when half of Europe is skintsville? Isn't it about time somebody studied the astronomical debt that hangs over everybody and did something about that?

And if anyone agrees that this project is a good one, why? What would the benefits be and can spending all that money really be justified?

There's always one joker isn't there? 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Not sure he is a joker. If we don't explore things then we never learn anything- I am sure that a lot of people thought sending Columbus out on his boat was a waste of money- until he bumped into America.

If we don't look at things closely and try to understand things better then what is the point of existing? I am sure you would not be saying it was a waste of money if they find a way of harnessing power to use on Earth instead of burning all of our fossil fuels, polluting the planet and contributing to our own extinction.

The cancer quip further up may not be so far fetched- pollution is a cause of cancer, therefore clean energy= less pollution= less cancer. If we didn't try to better ourselves and expand our knowledge we would still be living caves and resembling your average forest fan! Besides, The Euro has cost Europe far more than that and it looks like continuing- now that it a waste a money.

There should be a priority list- get rid of the Euro, get the population boom sorted out, get aids under control, cure cancer, find renewable energy, save the panda, plant biofuels, end deforestation, help developing countries on to their feet, fight world hunger, improve human rights, stop child labour, end terrorism, tackle obesity, get the economy back on track, end global warming etc etc etc. Unfortunately many of these noble aims are at odds with one another and therefore can never be solved- most of the worlds problems stem from the fact there are just too many of us and we are getting more numerous all of the time. If we don't push the boundaries and look for answers the human race will implode- still, we could just ignore it all and moan about us wasting money that we could spend bailing other countries out of a situation that was inevitable the minute they ditched the drachma

Whoooaa - That's not what I meant.

All I meant was maybe now's not the right time to spend mind boggling amounts of money when Europe is in the grip of a massive resession, tis all. Maybe wait until the debt's gone down a bit.

So are there other things you'd want to cut all funding from until then, or just science?

This mission will find out a lot, however it will not solve any of our current problems. Science is the most important idea we have but this voyage is a lot of money for what it is in an economic climate which is hemorrhaging money and when there is no solution. This mission will not find a new biofuel, cure cancer or any other physical occurrence which will solve our problems, the human race is destined to extinction anyway. Is it interesting, yes, is it the most important thing at the moment, no. Although a billion euro's in the big scheme of things is pittance it could be put to better uses for us at the moment.

That's what I meant, well said YR.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough in my original post, so apologies for that.

In answer to Martyn about cuts in funding. I think we shouldn't give as much money in foreign aid when it's needed here. Hospitals, schools, the NHS, fire service etc are all being squeezed and they could all do with tons more money. I'm not saying the aid which goes overseas should be stopped altogether - it's only right to help less fortunate people, of course it is - but must we give quite so much? Shouldn't charity begin at home sometimes?
