Clough Interview Last Weekend On Fls

If this has been commented on already, apologies, but I've been away all week. Was it just me, or did anyone else pick up on NC's tone when speaking about how much money we had spent over the last couple of years? It seemed to me that there was a hint of derision in his attitude when asked to sum up the mometus performance by the 10 men. Paraphrasing, he said something like "we haven't spent..huh... we haven't spen too much....". Not sure who it was aimed at, but it struck me as a timely hint to the Board.

If anything it was more of a dig at the gumps up the road who moan that their stingy chairman won't spend any money when they spent more on their two new strikers than we did on ten players. Just another exapmle of Nigel being very sly when he's extracting the urine...

Can we please not look into this too much. He's just stating a fact. We haven't spent too much money, forest have (in the period of time that Clough has been there).

My guess is, if it looks like we could be in the mix by January, there'll be some weightier investment.

I don't think there will be much investment in Jan as long as we don't get more injuries- Maybe a left back with a bit of luck . B.Davies nearly screwed our promotion season up by adding to the squad when we didn't need it. With Tyson coming in in a few weeks hopefully with Barks and Bailey and then a probably fit Addison coming back after christmas- maybe green too? I think that might just be the enough to build momentum for the end of the season- still don't think we'll be in the mix come Jan anyway though.

The thing with Clough is that he knew the restraints he had when he walked into the job, the board have had a big task on and now it looks like we're reeping the rewards, if we are still going strong by christmas and there is a position that needs to be filled then I think they will be in a position to fill it, as for another striker.. don't think we need one as Theo starting to look like an absolute bargin for the 100k we got him for, looks a much better all round player since he got here and been a very good player in our last two games, then obviously Ward and SDavies who are obviously talented players, very talented players who will score a good amount from wherever you put them, then Nathan Tyson who the management and players all look upto in admiration can see him being a key player for us, and Chris Maguire who can play in that role behind the front man or to the side who to be honest looks a very talented player but not getting much game time for one reason or another, just hope he doesn't go the way of Martin who did exactly the same and then obviously Ball, Doyle, Bennett all very good young recognised strikers.

I'd like a left back though, sorry for sounding like the gumps up the 52.

Clough said a few interesting things immediately after the Notts F game. On the telly highlights he said;

“We haven’t spent too much money over the last couple of years – but what we know is that they [the team] are an extremely honest bunch with an awful lot of heart”.

On Radio Derby he said;

“There’s character, courage, and honesty in abundance in the dressing room and that came to the fore today. We’ve said along that were not quite sure if we’re good enough and we’re certainly still a couple players shy of where we want to be - but we have those things in the dressing room..”

It sounded to me like he was highlighting the character (rather than the quality) of his players. He was pointing out that not a lot of money has been spent on the squad in the time he’s been manager. He was saying that we’re still at least a couple of players short of what he wants.

Nigel’s worth listening to as he’s always honest and straightforward. I think these statements to the media were mainly aimed at helping the fans understand the real financial constraints he’s working under and to manage our expectations about the capability of the present squad.

I think he was giving himself, his staff AND the board a little pat on the back at what they have achieved so far and that they have managed to build a competitive team on a very tight budget. We are still a few of players shy as he has been saying (LB, RB and DM) but the players are starting to look like a team and showing a bit more quality also. Before the Forest game we had been winning for the most part but not being particularly good to watch. The last 2 games have showed character, courage etc but also the beginnings of attractive football.

Well done guys, keep up the good work.
