Hope it is Jeff Hendrick and not Lee Croft!

There are 21 players who's contracts ate up in the summer, including Pearson, Green, Davies S, Anderson, Croft, Cywka, Martin, and Hendrick.

If it's one of them then I hope it's Hendrick.

Of course Bailey and OB are only contracted to 2013, it could be one of them too.

O'Brien Signs New Derby Deal

Posted on: Tue 13 Sep 2011

Mark O'Brien's excellent early-season form for Derby County has been rewarded with a new four-year contract.

The 18-year-old Republic of Ireland youth international defender has put pen-to-paper on a new deal which will run until the summer of 2015.

O'Brien has featured in all six of Derby's npower Championship matches so far this season, starting in five of them.

His performances in central defence alongside stand-in skipper Jason Shackell have prompted the Rams to move swiftly to tie the promising youngster down on a long-term contract.

Manager Nigel Clough sees O'Brien, who turned professional in the summer after completing his two-year scholarship in the Derby County Academy, as a player who can continue to develop and fulfil his potential at Pride Park.

Early Season Star: Mark O'Brien has been in excellent form for Derby

He said: "In the last two-and-a-half years Mark has had to overcome some challenging hurdles to get where he is today, but throughout that time his attitude has been exemplary and it has been incredibly rewarding to see him fit, healthy and playing football.

"He has been playing well and he deserves his new contract. He has taken his chance because of the injuries in the central defensive position and shown to everyone that he is an honest, brave and committed player who will put his head where some players wouldn't even put their feet."

Commenting on his new deal, O'Brien said: "I'm delighted and lost for words to be honest that the Club has offered me the opportunity to remain a Derby County player for the long-term.

"The last month or so has been an absolute dream. I've had so many highs during the last few weeks; it's been a huge learning curve for me in the early stages of my career and I'm really happy I've been presented the opportunity to extend my career here at Derby.

"I'm really happy here and I'm enjoying my football, so it was a no-brainer to sign."

O'Brien made his first-team debut for the Rams aged just 16 as a second-half substitute on the final day of the 2008/09 season in a 3-1 defeat at Watford.

In his fledgling career O'Brien has already shown his incredible strength of character by recovering from heart surgery which ruled him out for the entire 2009/10 season, and then an ankle operation last season which restricted him to just two brief appearances from the bench.

His consistent displays during pre-season in the build to the 2011/12 campaign, as well as a handful of injuries in defence, propelled O'Brien into the first-team squad as a substitute for the opening day of the season against Birmingham City and after Russell Anderson pulled up with a groin injury before half-time, he was given his chance to shine.

O'Brien made his first-ever senior start in the Carling Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town the following Tuesday and he went on to make his first league start days later, with Derby keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win at Watford.

He has retained his place ever since and despite Anderson's return to fitness in time for last Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Coventry City, O'Brien remained in the starting line-up.

O'Brien has become the second player inside a month to commit his long-term future to Derby after John Brayford signed a new contract until 2014.

Excellent news

The emergence of Hendrick and O'Brien is the best thing about the season so far

Even better than us winning our first 4 games for the first time since dinosaurs walked the earth?!

Whilst I think OB looks like a good defender I think he has been carried by Shackell in a few games. Also needs to work on his distribution big time.

Considering what he has gone through though and the fact that he has been chucked in at the deep end this season I think he is making steady progress.

Glad we are trying to develop youth. Get Hendrick signed up long term next.

In my opinion (which may well be wrong) yes.

I think those victories had an element of fluke, and allowed Glick to get away with ducking out of getting in a striker and an experienced midfielder. I suspect that those four victories may well have done us more harm than good.

On the other hand, developing bright young talent can have no downside. They either play for the rams for many seasons - saving a fortune in transfer and agents fees, they get sold on at a big profit or don't quite make it but are pretty cheap to pay off.

I think Hendrick will sign a new contract and Green will leave next summer.

Well thats 3/4 of a back four signed, with CH cover up until at least 2014 - just need a 2 left backs and a right back now and first choice defence and cover will be sorted.

Know what you are saying.

Its especially pleasing that we have brought a centre back through the ranks as I don't remember too many of these in the past.

What a great attitude this lad has. Just watched his interview on Ramsplayer. I like him even more now.

Both OB and Jeff Hendrick remind me a tiny bit of Roy Keane, young raw Irish lads with big hearts, given a chance, take it with both hands and unlikely ever to look back.

I think we've got two very good young players on our hands here, either we go up with them in the heart of the side or we don't go up and we sell em on - both will eventually play in the prem. As will Brayford.

Pleased we've rewarded OB's performances with a new deal - he deserves it.
