Craig Short has rejoined Derby County to help enhance the Rams' backroom talent, with the focus being on finding the stars of the future.

Short, who is now 43, has been appointed as head of recruitment in the Derby County Academy, but he will also be used by manager Nigel Clough for other duties on the football staff.

The former Derby defender has managerial experience to his name having been in charge of Hungarian top flight side Ferencvaros and npower League One Notts County during the last few years, and Clough is confident that Short will prove to be a valuable asset.

He said: "We're delighted to have another very good person in the building in Craig.

"Predominantly he will be involved on the recruitment side in the Academy, but he has a lot of experience which we will look to tap in to on the first-team side of things.

"He has a lot of contacts in the game and he will be a very good asset for Derby County.

"We think he has an ability to help attract youngsters here and be part of our Academy for years to come."

Derby's Academy is headed up by another ex-Ram, Darren Wassall, and he considers Short's arrival as a coup for not just the Academy, but the entire club.

He said: "It is fantastic news for Derby County to bring Craig onto the staff and he brings with him a vast amount of knowledge and bags of experience.

"He has contacts throughout the game both in England and abroad and they are something we will be looking to utilise moving forwards.

"Craig is excited about the role he is taking on and his arrival will only make us stronger not only as an Academy, but as a Club too.

"It is a great coup that we've managed to attract him here and his role as head of recruitment is a varied and vast one, from the under 18s right through to the under 8s, but Craig is more than up to the task and we're excited to be working alongside him."

Short amassed of 600 professional appearances during a long and distinguished playing career.

The central defender saw his footballing life begin at non-league Pickering Town before playing under Neil Warnock at Scarborough in the late 1980s.

He followed Warnock to Notts County in 1989 and after helping the Magpies to back-to-back promotions to the top flight be moved to the Baseball Ground for a then club record fee £2.5 Million 1992.

He made in excess of 140 appearances for the Rams ahead of a move to Everton in 1995 and then later Blackburn Rovers in 1999, during which time he made over 200 Premier League appearances.

Short linked up with Warnock once more at Sheffield United in 2005 and after making 25 appearances for the Blades, he hung up his boots in 2007.

With his playing days over, he joined the Blades' sister club Ferencvaros as a coach in 2008. He worked alongside Bobby Davison on the coaching staff before taking the reins a year later.

He took charge of League One Notts County last summer, replacing Steve Cotterill who had left for Portsmouth, but he left his post a few months later despite guiding them to eight wins and a draw from 18 matches.

Another ex-Ram, Michael Forsyth, who previously held the role of head of recruitment, has moved to the first-team scouting team.

Top guy, played with his heart on his sleeve for the club, did well abroad with Deano. Loads of contacts in the game. And if he can find and bring in young talent through his contacts then that is good for me.

Well come back to Derby Craig :)

Now lets see if I can find something to moan about with this appointment... like others, hmmmm No
