He's played the past 3 seasons at fullback against the premiership's best so i'd have no problem with him coming in for Roberts. I'm more concerned about this

Rams set to take a gamble on Bailey

Tuesday, August 02, 2011 Derby Telegraph

DERBY County could be forced to take a gamble on the fitness of midfielder James Bailey in Saturday's opening fixture of the new season against Birmingham City.

Bailey's pre-season has been decimated by a groin injury.

The 22-year-old visited a specialist last week and had an injection to try to help ease the problem.

He has not featured in any of the five friendlies but Derby will look to give him time on the pitch in tomorrow's final warm-up match against Aston Villa at Pride Park Stadium (7.45pm), with a view to him starting against Birmingham.

It is a risk but the Rams are short of options in central midfield.

They are keen to stick with a 4-1-3-2 system and Bailey is the obvious choice to fill the holding role in front of the back four.

Derby's failure so far to land an experienced midfielder for such a role has not helped matters.

John Eustace, a target all summer, has been allowed to slip through the net. He has signed a new two-year deal at Watford.

Craig Bryson, Stephen Pearson and Conor Doyle have played the position at different times in the friendlies but none of them are natural holding midfielders and that is why Bailey's absence has hit Derby hard.

"We'll get James a training session or two under his belt and if he comes through, he will certainly play for some part of the Villa game on Wednesday," said manager Nigel Clough.

"Would that be enough to put him in on Saturday? I think we have got to take the risk, as we are so short of "proper" midfield players, because we haven't managed to secure an experienced midfielder that we made a priority back in April."

Jeff Hendrick is also likely to feature against Villa.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been with the Republic of Ireland at the UEFA Under-19 Championships in Romania and has missed all of Derby's friendlies.

Hendrick impressed Clough at the start of pre-season.

"The frustrating thing is we have not seen enough of him," said Clough.

"We were delighted with what we saw of him but we haven't seen him in a game yet pre-season.

"He is young but he is a 'proper' midfield player and because we couldn't get somebody else in, or haven't done to date, then Jeff will be very much a part of our plans."

On the formation Derby are looking to play, Clough said: "There is an argument saying do we stick with the system when we haven't got the players who are ideal for it, or do we change and go to a more conventional 4-4-2?

"We can't judge the (4-1-3-2) system until we can get the personnel in it."

20 minutes into the Brum game he'll pull up and be out for the season!!!

There's going to be a lack of cover around, and he is a decent player. 6 month loan suits us, we now know we have cover and can search around for a left back to sign in January.

Not an amazing deal by any means, but a useful one.

I have always likened Kilbane to John O'Shea, as he can play anywhere you want him to, but he isn't very good at any particular good in any of them.

If he signs he will get my support whilst he is here.

"He' s played the past 3 seasons at

He was playing League 1 with Huddersfield last season...

before then, when he was actually in the Prem...

Seems strange that we can afford his wages though, he must be on a decent wedge as he was signed when Phil Brown was throwing 5 year, £50k a week contracts at the likes of Bullard...

Perhaps we do have money and are just stuck trying to get the DM and striker, rather than holding back?

I think we're probably paying half of his wages which'll only be around £6k, he's on I think £12k. Ipswich paid half of Bullards so perhaps we're doing the same?

the article on bailey is frightening and no thanks on kilbane, was good, now isn't. I would rather have no cover than kilbane there.

I'd rather have cover than no cover. Especially a very competent player in that position.

Especially considering we ourselves have no cover worth mentioning.

I might be inclined to suggest Leacock as DM but the boy seems so far out in the cold....
