What i want to know is,

Do you get international call ups if your academy coach has no idea what he's doing and his coaching is out of date and all the backroom staff around him are rubbish?

Just a question, mainly for emjlc02 but i suppose it's open to everyone.

Plus it takes years for the influence of new academy staff to show through as they have what they have to work with at the outset. This is why it's unfair to say that Clough hasn't brought any through yet.I heard him enthusing about the 14 year olds recently-presumably the new staff are responsible for these,as they may be for the guy in question?

I honestly think that having the name Clough (not only keeps you in a job in some peoples eyes), but in my eyes would help attract sought after youth players aswell.

Interesting that hardly any players have made the step-up since Billy Davies got rid of the reserve team and overhauled the youth team. Must take ages to get something right like this.....another reason to not change manger/staff every season.

The young lad isn't at youth team level yet he is at schoolboy level. I don't know why the post is aimed at me, the set up through the different stages is fine its the unqualified first team squad coaches that I know people have a problem with. I don't think this young lad gets into the england scene proves much little either way, through all our managers we have had players playing international football. The true showing is how many make it into the first team or as top players.

From my age group the top player was going to be micky lyons who played schoolboys and was at lillishaw with the elite group and kevin nicholson who was at sheff wed and was england school boy captain, neither have made it big time kevin plays in league 1 somewhere. Chris Riggott was not supposedly at there level yet he want on to play in the prem, for england u21s and play in a uafa cup final

has been called up to play for England schoolboys. He is a 15 year old striker

I remember Matt Richards was called up similarly.

Is this a good sign for the future?

Can't be a bad thing, he must be doing something right to be spotted, but with out a doubt doesnt mean he will get anywhere with us or England!

Andy Garner was absolute dynamite when he started playing for the reserves regularly at age 16. Six foot tall, lean, mean, quick as lightning, finishing like Ian Rush & good ball control. Couldn't wait for the following season in the hope that Arthur Cox would unleash him on an unsuspecting Football League!

Unfortunately, something happened over the summer - come the following season he looked a stone heavier & a yard slower. Played 70+ games for the first team & scored 17 goals, but he just wasn't the same player I saw at 16. Went to Blackpool & converted to centre-midfield & was captain for a fair bit. By age 26 he'd dropped out the Football League & played for Gresley Rovers & later Burton Albion.

With regard to Kwame Thomas, we wish him well & we hope that he's a star of the future, but there are never any guarantees.

To be fair dcfccov, I think your have shown what little you know with that statement, believing that a 15 year old getting called up for england schoolboys shows that Clough and his staff are up to the job. Really scraping the barrel aren't we?

Never mentioned Clough in my first post or question. You just read what you want to. I've read your critisicms of Wassel and his badges etc. That's why my question was for you. I'd find the posts, but i can't be arsed.

Have to agree with a number of posters that at that age anything can happen. The speed merchants start to lose speed and the defenders particularly start to lose puppy fat and seem quicker. The few with a decent shot some how lose power and the cocky ones lose confidence.

That's my experience since managing from U12's to now U15's. Personally I cant see what more I can do to coach them to next level because it's more to do with hormones and attitude. As a team my players are great but individually we have 1 or 2 that have got good potential for making a living out of the game. The next level of coaching is the most important one thus I have started to hand over to a manager that is a bit stricter, but a few players have already showed signs of not wanting to push on. If the coaches at Derby know how to cuddle the players at the same time as demand more whilst being firm, then we should see some progress.

Nothing more satisfying than bringing through players from own academy just hope the coaches of the 1st team don't destroy them!

Hope the young lad keeps his head down and learns from the experiences of players like Barnes. What an unfortunate waste of talent
