JohnClement Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Surely it is NOT obvious that a player should boot the ball aimlessly into the corner with 6 minutes left (there were 5 minutes added time), when it will then certainly come straight back in. However it is obvious that it is a poor thing to do to make a substitution when you are defending a set piece, particularly to replace a tall player (Pearson), with a smaller one (Pringle). Against QPR we were 2-1 up and Clough made an unnecessary substitution, whiich resulted in the ref adding on an extra 30 seconds in which time we concedeed amn equaliser. 4 points dropped due to stupid substitutions. Lets have the ctritiscism aimed where it is most deserved. Cloughs negative hyper-tense approach isnt doing the players any good whatsoever.
WorksopRam Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I hate us being say 2-1 down in the second half, and Clough leaves it till the 86th minute to bring on another striker. Particularly at home...
Srg Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 yeah he does have a tendancy to leave things too late, when clearly nothing is changing with the personnel who are the field.
Alph Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Nigel is the only man for the job for me right now. But i have to agree with you that kicking the ball into the corner with 6mins to go isn't how to close a game out. This backs to the wall defending doesn't work. How many points have we lost in the last 10 mins of games? Defending 18 yards from goal and giving the opposition nothing to think about other than launching another attack is no way to win games. Sometimes it's neccesary. But it's a mode we fall into around about the 80th min. We've got to give the opposition something to think about. We've got to try and play the ball into corners. Not blind hoof. We fall into this desperate defending mode and the opposition are likely to find a way through. What would you do if a team offered nothing on the ball whatsoever and were just happy to keep clearing their lines from inside their box? We leave too much to chance. One decent shot from 18 yards. One deflection. One lapse of concentration at the end of a game. Players flooding forward. It's just no way to see a game out. It's ok i suppose for 1 min. For 2 mins. But we do this from the 80th. And by the 90th min it's 9 vs 11 on our 18 yard line. I wish Nigel came up with some fresh ideas sometimes. The substitutions and team selections are sometimes odd too i agree. He can be a bit too stubborn can Nigel. :frown:

I completely agree - apart from noticing that we start this 'backs to the wall' stuff a lot earlier than the 80th minute. It invites trouble.
Alph Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Yeah, it can sometimes start much earlier can't it? But by the 80th minute we're just inviting constant, unrelenting pressure and by the 80th min teams are prepared to lose goals to chase a goal. But i agree with you. It can start far too early. The number of late goals we allow speaks volumes.
