It is a well told story in my family that the announcement of Brian Clough’s resignation from Derby on October 15th 1973 happened mid-way through my mothers 21st birthday party. Apparently the news understandably put a massive downer on proceedings, and pretty much everyone spent the rest of night crammed into the kitchen and glued the radio, desperately hoping it wasn’t true. I believe there were a couple of attendees with no interest in football who couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. But I suspect that rarely has a 21st birthday ended in such utter despair.

I’d love to ask her more about her memories of that crazy night, but alas she is no longer with us either.
