Nml ( is captaincy affecting his form? )

After watching the first 5 games and watching nml especially is captaincy affecting his performances. The catalyst for so many good moments last season or is it the step up in class/ plus playing on the left which i don't think suits him cutting in. I would love to know fellow rams views on this subject

No, I reckon what is affecting his form is being overworked in training.

I don't have proof of that and I could well be wrong, but I just don't see how double sessions of training would benefit an ageing player who is supposed to be all action in games.

I was thinking tonight on my way home, not only are we needing players anyway, we have lost NML that we are all used to, he currently offers very little. And I don't think it's his fault.

He's always a bit 'streaky'...looks shattered and/or like he's carrying the world on his shoulders.

Then bursts into life and looks very lively and dangerous. His first touch is often poor but on his day his power and pace compensate for that.

He's had very little opportunity on the break when he's had time to 'stand people up' and is being relied on to produce when he's being rushed and only rarely, whilst also expected to be chasing back the rest of the game.

Kinda reminds me of Raheem Sterling in that he can look unplayable and then clumsy as anything within seconds.

Doubt the captaincy is much to do with his current poor run, more a case of having less of the ball, less time and better opposition.

Not sure to be honest. He cut inside and had a good shot last night but turned down two (better?) chances to do so when there seemed to be more space. I think he's the wrong choice for captain but then I'm not a fan of forwards being captains. I would rather Nelson was captain.

This. He's been in and out of extended periods of form since he's arrived.

And as @dajstrawb suggests, it's unrealistic to expect him to perform as he did last season against much better teams and players.

We absolutely need his level of player for where we're at now. But I don't think he'll ever be a top-end Championship player with us.

Simple answer is no: he’s up against a better standard of defender and they’re making him work harder for any success. He’s a flat trak bully in League One, it’s negligent to think he would have the same impact at a higher level.

Better defenders, getting older, being arrested maybe something to do with it?

Don’t think being on the left is a problem. He played at his best and scored most of his goals last season on the left.

Nothing against NML at all, but could the glaringly obvious thing here be (bar last night) is he’s playing against better, fitter players. Has he ever ‘done it’ at Championship level?

This was going to be my point.

I don't think making a player like NML captain is a great choice personally. I'd sooner he focused on contributing, finding his own form and creating, than having the added pressure of carrying a struggling side as leader too.

Think there are people better suited to captaincy, which in turn would help NML I think.

Osborn seemed an obvious choice for captaincy. Understandably he wasn't chosen, with Warney being aware that he's going to miss  a lot of games due to pre existing injury situation. I wouldn't have opted for NML as captain, but presumably the manager knows his players very well.....

Mendez Laing found his level in the last 2 seasons. He has never been a stand out Championship player. I think he might have had one streaky hot 6 month period for Cardiff about 6 years ago. He doesn’t start for me, let alone captain the team, but he might occasionally be useful off the bench, in the final 20 minutes of a game, on the right wing, if we are needing to chase a goal.
