Ogbene, Liam Kelly and Vyner sound viable options who would be immediate improvements over what we have.

It makes me want to vomit, but Mason Bennett is a perfect Warne-style player too

I was in London last week and happened to walk into a pub full of Millwall fans. One said "Mason is a good player but constantly injured".

Sounds familiar.

Troy Deeney would have been ideal a few years ago, now not so much.

If we're in League one next season then I imagine the League One and maybe even League Two free agents lists will be of big interest to us, possibly even more so than the Championship one.

I am not against lower league signings.

As has been said many times, we don't need the oldies or the upcoming kids, we need peak age players, experienced but not old, not twenties. The ones on frees will cost big bucks that we can't pay in either wages, agent or signing on fees. It's another summer of get the best in that's attracted to us for reasons other than money.

You may be right but we won’t know until he has built a team with the players he wants. Maybe Rotherham were not able or prepared to fund the purchase of players (and offer attractive enough wages) to be competitive in the Championship (they were doing OK this season before he left weren’t they).

Here’s the list B4 is talking about, 72 current championship players who are on a free in the summer;

Interesting quote from the article;

“Head coach Paul Warne held a further meeting with his recruitment team last week while agents of some players who will be available also attended training.”

Agents attending training is intriguing

Agents attending training might improve our second half performances !

They won’t all cost big bucks. There’ll be plenty of players leaving a championship club like Rotherham or Wigan, along with others in leagues one and two, who we could more than likely match or offer improved wages to. The facilities, the stadium, “the project”, it won’t be as simple as we can’t pay certain fees so we can’t sign any of those players.
I’ll be very surprised if we don’t manage to add two or three in that peak age category. They might be cast offs from the league above or taking a chance on someone from the league below but a successful team is all about the sum of it’s parts.

Had a little nose online at league one and two players whose contracts expire in the summer, the majority according to transfermarkt or local newspaper reports similar to the DET one from earlier. Here’s a list of some who could/would be decent additions to our squad, provided we could sign them when competing with other sides and the restrictions we have. I am NOT saying we will sign any of them, just a list of some of the options out there with the odd thought tacked on;

League one frees

Joe Ward (27) - Peterborough, right sided player. Has 6 goals and 10 assists in 34 games this season

Sam Smith (25) - Cambridge Striker. Scored 7 in call comps this year, 21 last including 15 in league one.

Ryan Innis (27) - Charlton cb with 2 goals and 2 assists

Matthew Pennington (28) - Shrewsbury cb, 4 goals and 3 assists in 33 league one games so maybe a set piece threat. Right footed, represented by a certain Wasserman group.

Ryan Broom (26) - Cheltenham midfielder with 5 goals in all comps this season. Seem to remember he looked alright when we played them.

Ronan Curtis (27) - Portsmouth left winger, coveted by champ clubs in the past so maybe unlikely but hasn’t reached the same heights this season with 2 goals and 1 assist, might mean less interest in a proven player at this level.

Terry Taylor (21) - Burton CB/CDM. Doing ok at Burton, would be a good squad option at cb to replace a Stearman or Davies.

Josh Key (23) - Exeter right back, 3 goals and 1 assist in 34 league one apps… we need a specialist rb.

Jack Sparkes (22) - Exeter lb/lwb, 5 assists in 28 league one games this season

Archie Collins (23) - Exeter CM. 4 goals and 2 assists in 38 league one games.

Cameron Brannagan (26) - Oxford CM. 8 goals in 35 league one games this season. Been very good at this level for a couple of years.

Daniel Harvie (24) - MK Dons left back. 2 goals and 2 assists in 32 league one games this season

League two frees

Jon Guthrie (30) - Northampton CB, second in the league and have a really good defensive record (3rd best in the league)

Mitch Pinnock (28) - Northampton left winger. 5 goals and 6 assists in 37 games

Paul Smyth (25) - Leyton Orient right winger. 10 goals 1 assist in 29 league two games for table toppers.

Jordan Brown (21) - Leyton Orient CM. Former Ram’s academy player, made 25 appearances for the table toppers, bring him home?

I got bored after that, but hopefully you get the idea of what could be available to us in the summer. Not only old and past it players who leave in freebies.

I'm not sure how trustworthy that list is, as Cameron Brannagan (very good player) signed a new 3 year contract at Oxford last summer!

https://www.oufc.co.uk/news/2022/july/cameron-brannagan-stays-with-the-us/

There's a couple of forwards at Plymouth who are out of contract in the summer - Ryan Hardie (age 26) and Niall Ennis (age 23), both would be decent additions.

Cheers @Carnero. Always a tiny bit sceptical as to the accuracy of sites like transfermarkt, and again some of the local press articles I went through. So yeah may not be fully accurate/reliable. Was still an interesting exercise to see there are potentially plenty of options available to us, especially if the planning and charm offensive has already began.
