Derby County boss Nigel Clough is ready to swoop for Aston Villa’s Australian defender Shane Lowry in a long-term loan deal.

Clough plans talks with Villa today about the youngster who was in the Socceroos World Cup squad and will be allowed out to play first-team football.

The Rams want Lowry as a left back as they face up to a crisis in that position. He was at Leeds on loan last season and is keen to step up to the Championship.

Clough hopes to have Lowry in his side for the weekend - with managerless Villa prepared to let him out but yet to ratify that he can join them.

Clough keen on Lowry capture

Derby boss Nigel Clough has admitted to holding an interest in Aston Villa defender Shane Lowry.

The Rams are poised to dip into the loan market and have identified the Villa full-back as a possible new recruit.

The 21-year-old signed a new two-year contract with Villa over the summer, but remains on the fringes of their first-team fold.

That means he is likely to be free to take in a spell with Derby were they to make their move.

Promise

Villa allowed him to take in short-term spells at Plymouth and Leeds last term, with regular action key to his ongoing development.

Derby hope they will now be able to bring the promising Australian on board, with Clough confirming that he is keen to strike a deal.

"He's a lad that we have watched," he said.

"He's a left-sided player and a young lad who played against us for Plymouth last season."

Villa have given him a new 2 year deal in the summer, that would of been down to Martin O'Neill would it not? Obviously he thinks the lad has potential otherwise they would of got rid. But forget all that as YR knows best, if we sign this lad on loan we may as well just write this season off as a disaster and look forward to life in League One next season.

many great managers have made mistkaes about players, don't go all sarcy either just because i don't follow the party line on this board. Fact is why sign another lb? we have moxey and roberts who arn't much good but i doubt fecking lowry will be any better
