Craig Conway - Dundee United

Dundee United have rejected a £600,000 offer from Middlesbrough for the winger Craig Conway.

The Riverside club’s manager, Gordon Strachan, is a long-time admirer of the 25-year-old Scotland international and has been pursuing the former Ayr United player all summer.

Middlesbrough first made contact with United in July but did not make a formal offer. However, Strachan came back to United over the weekend, with a bid put on the table yesterday. United, though, are holding out for £1m for the winger and are not prepared to allow him to leave on the cheap.

Fellow Championship side Derby County are also keen on Conway and watched him against AEK Athens last week so could now come forward with a rival offer.

Interested spectators will be Ayr United, who are due 20% of any transfer fee so the division two club could net a sizeable windfall.

A product of youth development at Ayr United, Craig made his first team debut in season 2002-03 with a single substitute appearance against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on 29th April 2003.

In the following season he notched up another ten substitute appearances and began to establish himself as a first team regular in 2004-05 with 28 appearances and five goals, the first of these against Forfar in a 3-3 draw on 11th September 2004.

In 2005-06 he was more or less a regular in the Ayr United line up and totalled 35 appearances with four more goals to bring his total at Ayr to nine in 74 appearances.

After signing a pre-contract agreement in April, Craig became a United player on 1st June 2006, and made his debut in the opening game of the 2006-07 campaign against Falkirk at Tannadice. Craig was in and out of the starting eleven for the first few months of the season, but once Craig Levein had taken over as Manager in November, he had an extended run in the first team, missing only once in the next 18 matches, and even then was used as a substitute.

Improving with every match and seeming to have a hand in most of United's goals, at the end of February, Craig then suffered a broken foot, which looked to have ruled him out for the rest of the season. However he made a remarkably fast recovery and appeared in the final four matches of that campaign.

His appearances the following season were also restricted due to injury, with only three outings in August before being ruled out until December. After a couple of substitute appearances, he made his way back into the first team with a fantastic display in the 3-0 win over Aberdeen at Tannadice. Craig netted his first goal for the Club the following week in a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock. He scored again as United beat Aberdeen 4-1 to reach the League Cup final, where he received a runners-up medal after appearing as a substitute at Hampden.

Craig became a first team regular during the 2008-09 campaign, missing only two matches throughout the season, with 33 starts and eight substitute appearances. The five goals he scored included winners over Falkirk and Hamilton, as well as a spectacular free-kick in a 3-0 win over Hearts at Tannadice in September. He also netted a great solo goal in the emotional 2-0 victory over St Mirren at Tannadice in October.

Craig’s slow start to the 2009-10 season was boosted in October by his first international call up for Scotland’s friendly match against Japan in Yokohama, a match where he won his first cap for his country, giving an impressive display. This was followed a week later by his 100th appearance for United, in the 1-1 draw with Hamilton at Tannadice, and from the beginning of November until the end of the season, Craig missed only 2 matches, due to being rested after the club’s qualification for Europe and the run up to the Scottish Cup Final.

In the big match itself Craig gave a memorable performance, scoring twice and winning the man of the match award as United beat Ross County 3-0 to lift the Scottish Cup for only the second time in their history.
