The top 3 in the pop charts in 1971 were ...

1 Diana Ross - I'm still waiting

2 The New Seekers - Never ending song of love

3 T.Rex - Get it on (No1 previous week)

There was another song at no.8 which has been converted into various football chants over the years

I was 17 years old..was lucky enough to attend all 42 matches home and away. Me and 3 or 4 mates had missed only about 3 or 4 games the previous season and we decided to try and get to every game.The first time in Rams history I'd been to every game and the first time Derby County had been crowned League Champions! Not a coincidence surely! Fantastic time to be a Rams supporter.

Matchday 4 – Tuesday 24th August 1971 & another short visit, this time to Highfield Road, Coventry

First game of the season for Roy McFarland here but the Rams did well to get out of Cov with a point, going behind twice (first Coventry goal shown in photo). Goals from John O’Hare & Frank Wignall on 86 mins secured a draw.

Programme of the day a generous effort from Coventry – features John Robson on the front cover & flags an article inside giving views on ‘Star studded Derby County’

Table after the midweek results saw Derby slip to 3rd, a couple of points behind leaders Sheffield Utd

Did try & contact them a few weeks ago as I remember them all being online about 15 odd years ago too. Got no reply. They don't seem to be on any newspaper archive site that I could find either

Any help/useful contact gratefully accepted ?

Fantastic thread.

I took a very quick look on the Wayback Machine archive but at first glance it doesn't seem to have crawled the actual match reports: https://web.archive.org/web/20091121140818/http://www.therams.co.uk/archive1971

I don't think most people today could understand what it felt like for the normal working man in 1971. If one of those men had been in a coma since 1971 - just imagine he'd been a spectator hit on he noggin by a Hinton thunderbolt  - and he woke up today then he would refuse to believe he was in the same country or universe.  Even for some of us boiled frogs the changes seem mind boggling.

Although all the success in the early 1970s was great I was still a bit nostalgic for the Tim Ward days when you could watch a game without the excessive crowds and queues. You also didn't have so much hooliganism.

Matchday 5 – Saturday 28th August 1971 & Derby welcomed Southampton to the BBG in front of the TV cameras. For the benefit of younger viewers, Colin Todd was not sent off for that great save second half..

The 2-2 draw left Derby 4th, two points behind leaders Sheffield Utd;

I think I actually like this thread more because of sighting of some of the opposition players you forget about as you get older. Bobby Stokes not hard to forget for supporters of a certain age. But Jimmy Gabriel was Saints penalty taker. A few seconds of each of Terry Paine and Mick Channon too made me smile. McGovern and Zak obviously the Rams goalscorers.

I loved John McGovern He looked so awkward but he was one of Derby's most underrated players.

Matchday 6 - Tuesday 31st August 1971 & a visit to Portman Road, ipswich.

Ipswich ended the decade as one of the best club sides in England but this side was distinctly mid-table (finishing 13th). That said, the Rams could only manage a 0-0 draw here in front of 18,695. Worth mentioning Derby at this point had played 6 league games in the first 17 days of the season, quite a schedule. Alan Durban also made his first league start of the season here, replacing John O'Hare

Programme of the day at Ipswich a fairly quaint affair;

This draw did however push Derby back up into 3rd - Sheffield Utd still setting the pace at the top. Eagle eyed viewers will also notice the presence of Don Revie's Leeds Utd moving into the top 6...

Matchday 7 – Saturday 4th September 1971 & a trip to Goodison to face 1969/70 Champions Everton

The Rams got back to winning ways here with a 2-0 win in front of 41,024 – goals from Kevin Hector (18 mins) & Frank Wignall (72 mins) securing the points. Just on Frank Wignall, this was his 4th goal of the season after only 7 games but he only played 3 league games thereafter this season.

Programme of the day a pretty modern looking effort from Everton – generous too with our team photo on the main cover

The win moved us into second place but still 3 points behind fellow unbeaten side Sheffield Utd;

@LeedsCityRam many, many thanks for this fantastic thread and the brilliant updates. It's the highlight of my week.

I was hoping @Owen87ITK would secure highlights from as many games as possible and post a video diary along similar lines but I guess there's so little film from those days. Maybe a 'special' program on RamsTV at some stage.

Anyhow, a big thank you again.

On Frank, he was a very good footballer, and had the misfortune of the way Clough set Derby up. Also the two in that system were the best at the time.
