What a pointless contract negotiation.

Derby equivalent of the above:

So

Messi is in talks with PSG. I just saw a possible PSG XI and it looks unbelievably good.

Donnarumma, Kurzuwa, Ramos, Marquinhos, Hakimi, Wijnaldum, Verratti, Di Maria, Messi, Neymar, Mbappe.

A world class goalkeeper. Blistering pace at fullbacks, huge experience and a robust CB and CM pairing. Creativity from deep with Verratti and Di Maria, while a front three of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe.

With the benefit of being able to relax up in the league, that's a CL winning team right there.

Will still come a cropper in the CL to Atletico or similar

Wouldn't be tested enough domestically to win the Champions League.

Messi should do something very left field. He doesn't need the money. Why not come to Derby and play for free and make himself a total hero? I did meet him one time and he actually seemed a pretty decent bloke. Maybe he remembers? ;)

Messi is a fantastic player and his numbers are still extremely good but he's not going to get any better. His salary even for someone as good as he is really is monstrous. If he really wanted to stay there he could have let's be honest, offering to halve your 70 million dollar a year salary is a nice gesture but for a club that financially is in the toilet he could have done more than that if he wanted to. He could play for free and he'd still earn an absolute fortune in sponsorships. Research tends to suggest after 60k a year the relationship between money and happiness delinks and he's not going to run dry anytime soon.

It’s worse than that. It was £123m a year and he offered to halve it. For a 5 year contract.
So circa £300m and he’s bleating that he’s having to walk away from the club he loves.
That’s utter tosh.

Don't Leo, stay and play for 100k a year if it means that much to you.

Otherwise, duck off and add to the pension pot elsewhere.

He can't stay even if he played for free. Barcelona's wage to turnover ratio is still way too high even without Messi and they cannot register new players, which includes Messi, until they get the wages down to 70% of their turnover.

He also isn't legally allowed to take more than a 50% pay cut as per Spanish law. Not sure what else you expect him to do.

He wanted to stay at the club he has been at for his entire life, but was not allowed to thanks to circumstances outside of his control. If a man can't cry after leaving a place that has been home for almost 30 years what the hell can he cry at.

Perhaps they could stop buying players?

"And somewhat bizarrely, they have brought four new players in – Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia and Emerson Royal – without yet being able to register them for the new season due to their sky-high wage bill."

But 50% for Messi was still 'quite a lot' - hundreds of thousands a week. So maybe Barcelona decided to move on.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was saying earlier how 70% of global Barcelona supporters will no longer follow the club. They followed Barca because of Lionel Messi, not because of the club itself.

How much money will they lose from merchandising and BarcaTV streaming an all that now?

Well 70% of merchandising and TV wasn't enough to stop them getting into this mess - perhaps it encouraged them?

Thanks for clarifying. Interesting example then of the law doing the exact opposite of its intent.

They're in this mess because of the Neymar deal. They sold a worldwide superstar who brought in huge revenues through his own following and made a right hash of replacing him.

If Neymar had stayed at Barca, they wouldn't have shelled out for Dembele, Griezmann or Coutinho. That's over £350m right there.

The Neymar deal left them both weaker from a sporting perspective and from a financial perspective.

Lionel Messi's wages weren't ever the problem. I mean, it's not a problem for PSG or Juventus to accomodate their equally well-paid superstars, but Barca are the ones who have hit the brick wall despite having a bigger following than the other two. The reason for that is not Lionel Messi.

I'm not sure how reliable the websites are but a quick look suggests Griezmann earns almost £600k per week, Coutinho earns more than £400k while players like Pjanic, Umtiti and Dembele are all on over £200k per week.

If you want an example why they are in trouble, there it is.

As a comparison, only 3 players (De Bruyne, Sterling and Grealish) earn more than £150k per week at City. Mo Salah is Liverpool's highest paid player on £200k, while Van Dijk is on £180k.

Wages would still have been 110% of turnover if Messi stayed, but it would still be 95% if he left. They need it at 70% to be allowed to register new players. Barcelona have no choice in the matter - doesn't matter if they want to keep him or not - they can't sign him.

Barcelona are in proper poo atm. A lot of debts coming due as well, which they're going to have to figure out how to pay.

Do you think Messi would be happy to stay in a team that couldn't compete?

Unless they sold more players I presume? They could have Messi and some academy players, bit like us.

If this guy is correct....then 50% pay cut is the maximum reduction possible.

Messi said he wanted to stay. But last year he wanted to leave.

He's probaby caught in two minds. On the one hand Bacelona is his home and has been for the majority of his life. But on the flip side, he probably knows deep down they aren't going to compete and he still has trophies to win left in him.

The 2018-19 Champions League was Barca's last hope of a European title for many years, even had Messi stayed. The club needs a complete reset and this now will be the first step towards that.

If they sold more players then yes they'd be able to keep Messi. Personally I think any team with Messi in would still be competitive, but no i don't think Messi would want to be part of barcelona if they basically got rid of all of the other talents.

I think this will be a good thing for Barcelona. They've lost their way a bit in my eyes and this reset might lead to their academy coming back to the forefront

Link doesn't work.

Even if it's true, surely he could have taken a 1 month contract with a local cafe, say, them resigned?
