UNCERTAINTY still surrounds Luke Varney's future at Derby County despite the striker's first start for the club in 15 months.

Varney was a surprise inclusion in the team for Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Cardiff City at Pride Park Stadium.

The 27-year-old, who is wanted on loan by a number of clubs, received the call because the Rams were without three strikers.

Rob Hulse was ruled out by an Achilles problem, Chris Porter was only fit enough to start on the bench and Steve Davies is sidelined until the New Year as he recovers from knee surgery.

Varney's previous start for Derby was in the final game of the season at Watford in May 2009 and he has made only six appearances since he signed permanently from Charlton Athletic for around £1m in January 2009. His last was as a substitute in a 0-0 draw at Blackpool a year ago.

He set up Tomasz Cywka's equaliser against Cardiff and his performance earned praise from Nigel Clough.

"We were pleased with Luke, he tried very hard and had a hand in the goal," said the manager.

"He has been down the pecking order and the three ahead of him were not fit.

"Rob Hulse felt his Achilles in training on Friday and pulled out halfway through the session.

"Chris Porter was only there to play 10 or 15 minutes because he had not trained since coming off at Crewe with a hip injury.

"He probably won't train until Thursday or Friday now but him and Rob should be fit for next weekend."

Clough did not rule out Varney leaving the club on loan before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers and Crewe have all shown an interest in him.

"Luke's immediate future depends on what happens in the next couple of weeks, whether somebody comes in for him or not," said Clough.

"Like anybody, if an offer comes in we will consider it, and there may be one for Luke in the next couple of weeks.

"The way we are playing, it is Chris Porter or Rob Hulse up top but, unfortunately, both were not available to start against Cardiff.

"Luke came in and did a job for us but we will have to see what the next two weeks will bring."
