He put his hand up they didn't

I know - but the manger must have realised what a huge amount of pressure he was putting on him. He’d looked shakey since he came on - Southgate should have demanded one of the more experienced players to step up rather than bottle it…

Hope the misses don't weigh too heavily on the young lads.

Southgate’s poorest match. Seemed unable to turn the tide. Changes made too late and didn't come off.

And then bringing on specialist penalty takers...

Mancini clearly responded far better to adversity as Italy were outplayed for much of the first half.

They have a better team and come bring fresh legs on in midfield. We had a choice of Henderson coming back from long term injury and a 17 yr old lad.

Yes i imagine forcing someone to take a penalty when they don't want to is a good idea.

This was Southgates Lampard playoff final moment, his substitutions were horrific tonight. Apparently we’ve practiced penalties constantly leading up to this. Why, why, why, why do that stupid stutter run against one of the best goalkeepers on world football, the guy is 6”5 and we’re ******* around with soft stupid penalties.

what I must say here though, all props to Saka to stepping up to take a penalty when our “senior” players hid in the shadows, I sincerely hope he isn’t to badly affected by this, well don’t young man and keep that chin up.

Positives for me are that we have a decent team/squad for the next few years. Some of the youngsters are not quite there yet but I’m sure they will. Midfield lacks a bit of drive. It will come. We seemed to forget that we can play a bit too.

The better team won tonight imo.

Wtf is all that weird stutter running for penalties!!? Just pick your spot and hit it. Bizarre

A defender Maguire showed them how to do it, blast it in the top corner, smash the camera in the back of the net, job done, the kids like to fanny about, with all the pointless, painful, stuttery stuff............unfortunately!

Maybe it's our age, but I coach kids at football, and I still tell them to blast it into the corners and the keeper doesn't save it.

And with that, Gareth Southgate succeeds in his evil plot to get someone to miss a more important penalty than his. Fair play to him, I say!

I'm gutted ?

I'm unlikey to see Derby win anything in my lifetime at this rate and if it takes another 55 years for England to reach a final won't see them win anything either.  We started so brightly but let the Italians back into it, the match was there for the taking but we were far to defensive.

It feels like a massive missed opportunity, especially after Pickford kept us in it with a terrific save from Jorginho.  I ducked hate penalties.  Were they 3 of the best 5 we have left on the pitch?  If you're gonna have a stupid stuttery run up at least pick out a corner but they were just awful and if you miss 3 from 12 yds you deserve to lose.

The biggest thing for me was those substitutions. He put Rashford and Sancho on and basically their first kick of the ball was a penalty. You're not in the right mindset. What was with those run ups for the penalties as well? Slow and  staggered. Easy saves for their keeper as it was obvious which way they were going. Really disappointing especially after such a good start, scoring after 4 minutes.

I wasn’t suggesting he should force them - but when they’ve spent 5 weeks practicing penalties I’d have expected a few of the more senior players to step up rather than hide - and the manager should have been working on that. Henderson for example - hugely experienced, Liverpool captain, yet subbed off because he hasn’t got the balls to take a penalty. Saka will get all the crap but some of the others need to look in the mirror and ask why they let that situation happen….

Better team won, but we won’t win anything with Southgate, ever. I love the bloke, he’s smart, articulate, likeable but he’s just doesn’t have that nouse, that experience that it takes to win the Euros / World Cup. Mancini absolutely schooled Southgate tonight
