I've got loads of Paul Weller albums, but have only ever owned Compact Snap on CD, and now Snap on vinyl from The Jam, which get frequent airings.

Am I missing out on much not listening to the actual albums?

I loved 'This is the Modern World'... decent songs on there you would never have heard otherwise.

Forgot in my list The Master Plan - Oasis, listening to it tonight. Awesome and they’re B-sides, incredible

Acquiesce, Rockin Chair, Talk Tonight, Half the World Away and The Masterplan itself. 5 of the best Oasis Songs.

It's probably another thread, but they'd be in my top 12 with Rock n Roll Star, Cigarettes and Alcohol, Live Forever, Slide Away, Some Might Say, Don't Look Back in Anger and Whatever.

I'm going to disagree with @Chester40and say avoid In the City (their first album, ok but hasn't really stood the test of time) and This is The Modern World (much better and what got me into them, but still immature) and go straight for All Mod Cons and then Setting Sons and Sound Affects.

All Mods Cons really showed Weller's songwriting and it moved them out of just another punk wannabe band into a niche all of their own.  'A' Bomb on Wardour Street, The Place I Love, In the Crowd, To Be Someone  and of course, Down in the Tube Station at Midnight are some of the best tracks The Jam ever wrote.

Having said that, one of my fave tracks on the album was David Watts which was of course, written by Ray Davies of The Kinks.

The Jam were weird because even for an age where that happened more often, that they had a bunch of singles like News of the World, Strange Town, When You're Young (possibly their worst single and I was so gutted when it came out I thought Weller had utterly los the plot), Going Underground (the first single since The Beatles to hit the #1 spot from out of the chart) and Funeral Pyre (love that track)  that never made it to albums other than greatest hits.

BTW, I just took a look at Snap, I thought I remembered it being a greatest hits and it's not. It has a bunch of tracks off All Mod Cons, so if you like Snap you will love AMC.

Firstly I'd like to congratulate you on the very high quality alphabetising of your list, good work.

More importantly, I applaud your inclusion of Magazine's best album.

John McGeoch is up there with Andy Gill (both sadly dead) and maybe even The Captain as the very best punk guitarists.

Plus, Devoto was a haunting  ethereal vocalist and brilliant writer.
