FindernRam
Searching our wallets to find some real money to the Grandkids for Easter, realised Mrs Findern and I have not used cash for anything for months. Even for small items just use tap and go. How often do you use real cash these days? Then I see that there's a new £50 note coming out! Why? I don't think I've ever seen one, old or new, and certainly wouldn't know if its real or not. Why waste all that money redesigning something no-one uses. And before you flame me (is that still a saying?) I do know some old folk have to use cash so for smaller denominations that's fine.
Gee SCREAMER !!
Saw the topic and assumed it was started by our Forest friends regarding his move to Villa and the ensuing season of cack. More on topic, I think I've had about £15 in actual cash in my pocket in a year. Always used to get more satisfaction getting an envelope with notes in at the end of the week rather than the electronic in one end and out the other you get now, was always more careful with physical money as well. The lack of actual cash in the hand has probably tripled personal debt nationwide. Last time and pretty much the only time I had a £ 50 note was 6 years ago and nobody would take it. Aren't the old folk namely the baby boomer generation supposed to have more disposable income than any other generation that's come after them? So as prices rise possible due to the pandemic but definitely due to that thing starting with B, which we can't mention, of cause the old folks will need the new £50 pound note, more than they will need the smaller denominations. Eddie
When we were in Kings Lynn on 20 March 2020, I went to the cashpoint and took £100 out to pay for a couple of nights boozing. Half an hour later, we got the lockdown news. Since that date, the only things we have paid cash for is the fortnightly tea man and the window-cleaner. We still have a bit left in my wallet. Wolfie
I’ve probably got about £40 in my wallet and it’s been in there for about 6 months. I say probably because I haven’t even taken my wallet out with me for ages. Use my phone to tap & pay for everything.
Mostyn6
Makes me worry they’re trying to take over the world. China that is. Look into the way they do things nowadays and you’ll think it’s based on a Black Mirror episode.

And before you flame me (is that still a saying?) I do know some old folk have to use cash so for smaller denominations that's fine. I use it less frequently than I did 3 years ago, but always make a conscious effort to use it when I do buy something 'in the real world'. There's a new £50 note coming out because stock brokers need something to snort Coke with, criminals need a way of moving money without it being traceable (not all of them understand Bitcoin yet) and the trades need it to stiff the taxman. Card payment spend is far higher on average than cash (can't remember the % but was double digits). If you make money an abstract thought people don't have the same understanding/sense of loss when they spend it. All ways for the corporations to rake more in, and the government will support it because the same applies to Taxation. Advantages and disadvantages to both, as long as we have a healthy mix of both and both are free to spend then there's no problem. Cashless society seems a dangerous idea to me, but don't think it'll happen. I mean, even cheques are still taken and they were written off as useless about 20 years ago. Mucker1884
Spookily, a bit of a shopping foobar meant I had to go to the local corner shop last night... first time in about 5 years! Luckily I took my wallet "just in case", as Apple Pay was not accepted below £2. Had to break a £20 note to spend £1.87! Apart from that, we pass a real tenner to the window cleaner, and that's about it. I've always "felt naked" having no cash on me... both paper stuff in my wallet, and the odd coin in my pocket, if only for smaller/cheaper items... but have always used a card for bigger shops/main supermarket etc, for the last couple of decades. I still hate going anywhere with no cash on me! Cash is always handy for grandkids birthday's and such, of course. But this past 12 months have certainly escalated my use of Apple Pay, and I get the impression that more and more of the smaller independent shops have now gone electronic... for obvious reasons... so I expect to continue now, with just rare top up's from the cashpoint machine, that end up staying in my wallet for months on end! Eldest son (Late 30's) has hardly ever taken cash anywhere with him, and I'm not even sure he's ever actually owned a wallet?
cstand
Cashless society will happen at some point in the future I don’t agree with it but my kids moan when they go anywhere and can only pay by cash so young people will embrace the idea.
angieram
Already been mentioned are the window cleaner and children's cash presents. Only other thing I have paid cash for since lockdown is at some car parking machines that don't accept a card.
Parsnip
Last footie match I went to was the Arsenal/Chelsea womens league cup final at the City Ground. At half time I gave my 10 year old a tenner to get a bag of minstrels and he patiently queued up for the full duration of half time only to be told it was card only and sent away minstrelless. I remember thinking at the time how typical that was of this backward craphole of a football ground.

ramit
We use cash about 80% of the time. Paid half the price of our auto with cash. The only one to give us trouble were Domino's pizza, so we don't do business with them anymore.
