Eddie
Probably the best video of one complete cycle of the eruption you will see today - drone footage showing the lava rising and then overflowing the crater... I found that very educational - we really do live in an age of tremendous opportunity for being able to witness these extraordinary events safely but almost feels first-hand. Thanks for posting. ? ramit
Have a look at this @Eddie two people tried to get to the main crater by walking over the lava. They were indeed very lucky not to get roasted alive. A man reportedly from Switzerland had his wife take a photo of him standing on fresh lava, with magma glowing underneath. Someone is going to get killed there quite soon, if this idiocy keeps up https://www.visir.is/g/20212121163d/hafa-gengid-ad-rotum-gigsins-og-fluid-undan-flaedandi-hrauni

Eddie
It looked a day or so ago that the eruption was slowing... Doesn't look like that now. ramit
Carl Sagan
This is quite neat, showing radar imagery from satellites as the eruption has developed. If you follow the link through to the BBC page there's a fuller video: ramit
ramit
The coastguard ship Þór has been sent to investigate the area off the coast of Krísuvík after reports of smoke rising up from the sea. Þór will be there in a few hours. Possibly an undersea eruption has begun. The old site is still churning out magma, intermittently.
ramit
Well that was a let down. Þór sailed through roughly the area in question and crew saw no smoke and they sailed away. They have equipment onboard they could have used to scan the bottom and then drop a thermometer down, but they didn't bother apparently. It's the second time smoke has been seen over the sea in that area, so something is going on down there. The tactic appears to be, wait and see. ramit
The tourists refuse to follow regulations and walk over the lava to get a closer look at the magma, one starts off and then the rest follow. It's amazing that no one has been cooked yet. They also throw stones and garbage onto the lava. If it were up to me, they would all be arrested and thrown out of the country, never to return. https://www.visir.is/g/20212141535d/fjoldi-gekk-langt-inn-a-hraunid-til-ad-komast-ad-raudgloandi-hrauni https://www.visir.is/g/20212140487d Eddie

ramit
You seem to have been correct @Eddie, it appears to be a shield volcano in the making. You might have to change the title of the thread soon if this fellow is correct. Eddie

Runny lava = spreading = shield volcano. ramit

Eddie
2 hours ago, Boycie said: Anyone else wondering wtf? Seems to have been some weird weather across the world and volcanoes, earthquakes. There are, on average, 30-40 volcanoes around the world erupting at any one time. There is, on average, one Magnitude 7 earthquake every 3 weeks (8 and above are much less frequent - perhaps 2 a year, whereas Magnitude 6 earthquakes occur every 2 or 3 days). Weather extremes are increasing though - 'hundred year' events are becoming more frequent, for example, and 8 out of the last 10 years have been, world-wide, the hottest 8 years on record. The top 10 hottest years on record all occurred during the 21st century.
