neither bird or knight are good enough defensively though

Bird is severely underrated defensively because he doesn't thunder about and Knight is fine defensively for the role he plays

If you want to play through midfield your deepest midfield has to be able to offer for the ball, turn and then move the ball again and do that over and over in a game. Shinnie cannot do that, and it would cripple playing through the middle. If you want Shinnie in the team I think I'd have him over Knight (who's not been great lately) playing a bit further up in a role where he can press around the pitch as you can't really do that as a sole dm as it leaves gaps but I honestly think we might be better off dropping him.

Rooney knows he has a fairly narrow band of best 11..has to rest a few sometime with constant midweek games..hopefully a fit and firing Lawrence will help going forward when he is ready to return to the squad..results went in our favour elsewhere so no damage done..

Really? I mean really?

After tonight. After you saw with your own eyes how much better we were without them?

We had Byrne missing, Marshall missing, Baningime full debut, Wisdom out of position, Edmundson out of position, CKR missing, Mengi first professional 90mins.  Not sure how you can say the reason we were bad is because Bird & Knight didn't play.

I mean Bird you can. It was a stark difference after he came on with how we moved the ball. He's also pretty much the only midfielder we have fit that can miss players out with a pass, who actually offers the ball and doesn't just play the ball back the direction he got it.

We've relied on Lawrence coming back already this season and look how that went. ( One decent match?)

Because Cardiff just waltzed through our midfield like it wasn't even there maybe? And haven't you just said the same in not so many words ?

This made me wonder how much of the silly tinkering under cocu was also due to the influence of our championship specialist no2.

Indeed.

Also how long after he's gone do you continue to excuse our impotent attacking threat from central midfield and the wings by saying "Cocu coached the attacking play out of them", it's 3 and a half months later but without CKR we look just as unlikely to create something in open play as we did early on in the season.

There's very little to suggest that Rooney & Rosenior's coaching methods are having a positive influence on any of our creative players.

Ultimately, we are a poor football team that can sometimes grind out results without necessarily playing well.

A team that has any ounce of ability aren’t the third lowest scoring side in the division with the vast majority of the season played. It just means when we don’t pack our defence and midfield then we’re likely to concede goals too.

Let’s just be thankful that when the fake Sheikh completes his takeover and completely kills the club that we can start up Derby City Football Club away from any gypsy curses and hopefully run it correctly.

The result isn't a shock after seeing that team sheet and set-up. Seriously hope that isn't the management team believing a hype, almost a lack of respect to the competition of the Championship...it was that "off". I hate losing games like this, rather get trashed knowing we've given it a shot, tonight we've turned up to fulfil a fixture, nothing more. Not sure I understand the tinkering in defence, we were solid as a rock for weeks, I thought the problem was our lack of creativity and goals, not defence.

I had the same thought mid match, that Rooney was beginning to believe the hype about his progress as manager. He has made good selections and substitutions but not this evening. Reminiscent of Lampard in this respect cos he did the same sort of thing with the same consequences.

yeah maybe, but he did come on with 3 other players so you can't say it was just him that changed the game. I actually thought Watson looked really good when he came on. Great movement, great energy, good passes, always looking forward.
