Rob Hindmarch scoring at Sheff Utd the year before in the cup - another time we had more inside the ground than they did. The players running round Allestree golf course (sign the petition-see other sports thread) during pre season training, Andy Garner and Rob Hindmarch playing tennis at Chester Green - realising they weren’t quite as slow as they looked on the pitch. That Friday night against Rotherham. Shilton’s one man show at Newcastle. Seven against Telford and five against Crewe in the next game. The parachutist missing the ground at Elm Park - a rare disappointment of an away day. Mickle, Mickle, Micklewhite. George Williams scrapping on the goal line at Stoke. Goddard’s chip against Everton. Deano’s debut. Phil Gee ‘screamer’ against Arsenal. Great days.Great team. And as someone has said, wake up the day of the game and fancy it, head off without a ticket, meet your mats behind the goal - no weeks of planning or organisation. Just the match. A load of Derby had stopped in Uttoxeter and took apart a couple of pubs and several local Stokies got knocked about a bit. Slept through it like a baby! The thing I would love to ask him is why when he had such good balanced teams that took Derby all the way from third division to fifth in the first division and then went and brought in Kitson, Johnson and Gabbiadini and tried to play them all at the same time but it never worked, what was his thinking. Went to away games that season on the football specials run by trent buses from the bus station in Derby, went to that particular game on a double decker that didnt get above 30mph or so it seemed , with the red hot atmosphere in the ground we did wonder if we would get out of the potteries alive on that contraption Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Right behind goal at stoke for the mass scrum on goal line, think it was George Berry? Stokes giant defender in middle of it, mind you'd steer clear of him for next 10 minutes! Yeah Stokies away to the right fought with police most of the game. Brilliant away days. The speed and skill of footballers now is incredible, helped by bowling green pitches, but is the actual going to the game better?
