Trying to develop as a footballer, in a team that is complete devoid of quality, under a owner who is trying to sell the club to anyone who will take the financial burden off him, also under a very inexperienced coaching staff regardless of their status as a footballer ...

Thought you were on about Liverpool there...

Hughes never really was 'technically gifted'

Not often I disagree with you assessments buddy, but Hughes was massively technically gifted. In what was a very good vintage for the club, he still stood out on that score. I'd definitely agree that he's a very clever lad but I think the only reasons he's not dining at the top table, are that he lacks a yard a yard of pace and could score more often.

Made his first team debut tonight against Osasuna.

Liverpool fans raving. Suggest he should be loaned our to a Championship club to get experience.

£1m rising to a possible £3m we paid for Kaide Gordon is massive bargain.

That's the scouting we should be lookin into more.. These players will have ridiculous price tags on their name soon because of their nationalty (and ability)

Such is the problem of having a category 1 academy in the championship.  Money down the toilet.

“There’s Kellan, who plays at [League Two side] Mansfield,” he says, “Then there’s Keldon, who left us at Under-16s and now plays non-league.

“After then there’s Kaide, and finally Chase, who is with our U14s. It’s a footballing family, for sure!”

Lets hope the best is last!

Agreed, although it seems pointless us investing the cash to be a Cat 1 academy, yet still losing players on the cheap to set ups in the same tier.

I've often thought that in recent years. Whats the point of an academy if our best talents just get cherry picked on the cheap by the big clubs anyway.

Obviously you can't keep someone here against their will and these players we lose would probably find it hard to turn down the likes of Man City, but it does make me wonder if the academy investment will ever pay off. Maybe Brentford had the right idea after all.

This is the EPPP in action isn’t it? Where a tariff sets the price for what these young players go for.

Between 9-11 we get £30k per year they are with us.

12-16 we will get 40k per year they are with us.

Now this bit will just show how great it is for EFL academies.

10 first team appearances for EFL club - £25k

10 first team appearances for PL club - £150k

Wait for this one….just £250k if they played 100 games for a EFL club, £1.3m for a PL club.

To play 100 games before you’re 18 would suggest you are something special, but we could potentially lose them for under 500k.

Replaces the old tribunal system, but allows PL clubs to have us all by the danglies.

Spot on, its a terrible injustice

As if the big premier clubs dont have enough advantages already, the current system actually encourages them to go trawling around EFL clubs cherry picking their best kids.

We end up losing twice over - not getting a fair price and then missing out on them improving our team when they develop !

Surely something needs to be done about it ?

Maybe the solution is some kind of mandatory sell on clause of, say, 50% plus a very significant appearance fee clause. Currently these cannot be used by the club because the youngster has never signed a senior contract.

Not sure what can be done. The EFL negotiated these terms with the Premier League in exchange for increased "solidarity" payments. I doubt most clubs with their Cat 2 and 3 academies care. I expect we are one of very few clubs affected.

You may well be right.

The Category One Academies are: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Blackburn, Burnley, Brighton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Everton, Fulham, Leeds United, Leicester City, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Tottenham, West Brom, West Ham and Wolves.

If you take out the Premier top 6, who seem to be the main current beneficiaries, that still leaves 22 clubs with a Cat One academy. 9 of them are in the EFL. Of the rest you would think most are also exposed to losing starlets to the glamour clubs.

Maybe it should just get renegotiated, possibly as part of the Rick Parry’s/EFL aim to reduce or get rid of parachute payments ?

Gordon played and scored for Liverpool in a behind closed doors game against Aston Villa. A number of first team regulars who didn't play against Norwich were also involved in the game played at Anfield.

The rules regarding the transfer of academy players definitely favours the bigger clubs.
