But is it the motivation, the tactics or - just plain and simple - the ability of the squad?

This had been going on for seasons, we got carried away under Frank, had it not been for Mason Mount we wouldn't have got into the play offs, remember how bad we were without him and we had Wilson and Tomori playing. Lampard ows his managerial career to Mount because without him would have been in a very simular position as today.

We would have struggled but I don't think we'd be struggling as much as we are now.

Agree. when Mount was injured it was a big loss for us, but at least we were still picking up some points. Probably would have just finished mid table without him in the squad, not be worrying about league 1 like we are now.

can't see how we go from a consistent top 10 side to a rock bottom side in a few months.

Tactics and philosophy for me from cocu, will take a while to knock it out of em, WHOEVER is in charge.

imo.

Surely its down to the fact the majority of that team left,

Under Frank this was our most common team

Carson; Bogle, Tomori, Keogh, Malone; Bryson, Huddlestone, Mount; Wilson, Waghorn, Lawrence

None of that back 5 are here anymore, add to that we lost Cole and Lowe as well as Olsson and Pearce who we were paying

The midfield is gone, add to that we lost Johnson and Jozefzoon as well as the players we were paying to not do much Butterfield, Thorne and Anya

Up Front we lost Bennett, Nugent(who played 34 games under frank), Marriott and Martin as well as Blackman who was being paid not to do much

We have lost since Frank left a total of 17 first team players (Carson; Bogle, Tomori, Keogh, Malone, Cole, Lowe; Bryson, Huddlestone, Mount, Johnson and Jozefzoon; Wilson, Bennett, Nugent, Marriott and Martin) and around 6 players who weren't doing much

Then we wonder why we are here

Is it the tactics, team selection, lack of motivation or ability of the players?

Hey, let's have a poll ?

All of the above. Just to add that the timing of this protracted takeover is dreadful, and a significant factor in the lousy performances.

Lots of contributing factors but the lack of a goal scorer brought about Cocu’s demise and wont help anyone this side of the New Year.

Without someone to score goals, we won’t win (m)any games. Seems obvious but clearly, it wasn’t to those in charge of money and transfers.  Nothing against CKR but we needed someone who would help to transform the team, attack wise.

January 2021 is a very important month.....

I think that even with Klopp as manager , the squad would never be good enough to get near the play offs. Therefore we go back again to recruitment since Nigel left. We have bought the likes of Blackman and turned our noses up at the likes of Watkins . How do Brentford get it so right? Also it would have helped if the academy could have produced a decent striker.

Its easy to work out, we don't have an out an out goalscoring striker compared with other championship teams. We need to gamble with at least Stretton and Hector-Ingram till at least the January window. Our last 6 matches we have created 62 shots at goal and 19 on target with a return of 2 goals. High flying Bournemouth last 6 games produced 84 shots with 21 on target producing 13 goals. Another team, with a similar shots ratio to the Rams in their last 6 matches is Brentford. They had 62 shots and 22 on target scoring 6 goals (what was the difference, they have a goalscorer) Toney for Brentford is currently on 13 goals for the season.

We're crap at both ends. We can't keep a clean sheet to save our lives and we struggle to score at the other. It's a really horrible toxic combination which will see us in League 1 next season.

How many goals are in this set of players from the senior players available?

Waghorn 10-15

Lawrence 5-10

CKR - 5-10

Shinnie, Holmes, Jozwiak maybe 5-10 together.

At best you might get 45 goals, however so far I believe those top 3 have 3 goals.

You are looking at Knight and Sibley plus the academy strikers to do the rest.

Only takes one of Lawrence or Waghorn to be out of form to be in trouble. We have both.

This is why I can't understand why Whittaker, JHI, Stretton and even Sibley aren't getting more game time.

There are many different things but the biggest single thing is fitness.

We can't press all game and end up sitting back the last 20 minutes as we can't do anything else.

If you held our own in the last 20 - 30 minutes of games we'd be mid table.

Rooney's lack of fitness since lock-down was a massive factor in our slump. First it forced Cocu to use him as an ageing quarterback meaning slow and predictable football. Then in order to get him off the pitch we've made him head of the committee. What a joke

If he had been fit and sharp, we could have kept him in the hole and watched some football in the final third, that's what we're lacking. He's still got a pass that splits defences

Its the whole team's fitness. We just can't play at a decent tempo for 90 minutes.

There was another thread about sport psychology, but this has similar topics so I put some commonly used theoretical charts here.

This one is nice and simplified version of team dynamics framework. Basically there's a lot of options what can go wrong to drop the team level outcomes:

It'd be easier to understand if they were different colours.

After the takeover things will soon settle. A new manager almost certainly Wayne Roiney will settle things. Wayne needs to see how it goes till Xmas when I am sure he can attract players to help the cause. We just need to keep in touch with the teams immediately above us until Xmas. Four new good loan signings in key positions could easily set us on an excellent run. If Wayne can get some.players from Man Utd, Everton, Crystal Palace and the like we will be fine. We can start building for a top six finish next year. Wayne knows the present squad whereas another manager will take time to settle in and then it could be a bit too late for us to escape the bottom three. COYR
