And a lot of fans instantly dismiss the idea of Wassall...

Hey there's an idea which makes perfect sense....

Wassell as manager,Mac as dof.

Both know the club and want to play the same football, both sharing the same playing style.

Wassell costs us very little to promote.

That honestly could be perfect

Obviously TBE and Cox managed good stints in the top flight. Cloughie and Mackay both sensational no question. But other than those McClaren record in both stints stands up well so really don’t get how people say he failed, especially second time around when he pulled plus out of a situation very similar to the one we find ourselves in and even had us flirting with the playoffs. What would we give for that now!!

Billy got us up but McClaren IMO is the best manager we’ve had since TBE, and furthermore our decline under TBE can be pinpointed to the exact day McClaren left for United. I think he’d be the right manager to get us out of this but pleased he’s back in some capacity to make sure all the great work with the academy doesn’t get chucked in the bin with the new ownership.

Wassall got us playing very nicely indeed, did a very good job in that regard, but by god was he naive tactically when it came to making the big decisions, and not just based on the Rotherham game.

The mindset of pretty much all teams at U23/U18 Academy level is attacking, not really focused massively on the defensive side of things, or the tricks employed against you in senior football. It's quite pure in some ways and that works as a bit of a leveller.

Of course I don't mean that tactics aren't important or worked on at all, but there are things that academy teams just don't come up against, and situations the managers don't have to deal with - it's a different ball-game.

It's partly why some young players make such an big initial impact, but can struggle to maintain it. The ones who step up and stay there and get the real big moves, establish themselves at the top level, are the ones who seem more naturally understanding of the tactical side of the game, have the right mentality & adapt and learn quickly the realities of playing at first team level.

You could see at times how it was the same for Wassall stepping up to the first team as it is for a young player, the things he'd been doing well over the past few years and what he was used to carried over, but so did the tactical naivety.
