Blackpool boss Ian Holloway is ready to splash a record £1 million fee on Derby County striker Rob Hulse as he looks to make his first big signing for the Premier League.

Holloway has made an inquiry for the experienced and available front man and sent top spy Billy Dearden to watch him in action at the weekend.

Hulse will be sold by Nigel Clough’s club to bring in money for new players - and he is for sale at the kind of price that the cash-conscious Seasiders can afford.

Blackpool made skipper Charlie Adam their biggest-ever buy when they landed him from Rangers a year ago for £500,000. But they will have to double that to land Hulse.

And Hulse will also have to come within the club’s pay scale if he wants a return to the top flight where he played for Sheffield United and West Brom.

Holloway’s club are trying to keep control of the salaries they pay and that may make negotiations difficult with Hulse who is already on £600,000-a-year at Derby which is more than any Blackpool player is paid.

The move will be a test case for the new boys who have had a quick lesson in the harsh financial realities involved - despite winning the £80 million jackpot of promotion.

So we buy him for 1.75m and flog him for 1m at a time when we need him. He is our best striker and he cannot be put for sale. If Hulse is sold I'll be furious.

Would you rather see him go for nothing in 12 months time having scored 10 goals this season?
