English football is in critical care.

Something clearly needs to be done to ensure the survival of the football league pyramid. What we have in this country is pretty much unique and it cannot be allowed to go to the wall- a number of premier league clubs have been traditionally small and spent a long time in the 3rd tier or even below and they should reflect upon this. Either, the EFL needs to find a way to bailout clubs finances through the government, a premier league donation which is more than overdue or getting fans back into the stadiums so the clubs lower down the pyramid can survive. The current strategy is basically locking the clubs below deck as the ship is sinking and giving premier league clubs all the spaces on the life boats.

A relative of mine is an accountant and is currently doing a lot of pro-bono (free) work for a non league team who have been in existence for well over 100 years. Normally his hourly rate is well into three figures apparently, but he is a "real" fan.

The reason is because this, historically well run, club is weeks from going out of business. The owner cannot sustain the losses anymore as their primary business is severely constrained. The Sponsors (really donors as they get very little return on their advertising) are withdrawing for the same reason and one has already gone out of business. The club has very little debt to service and normally the credit rating is good but the banks will not grant more money without security. The ground is not available for use as security apparently.

Rates/Tax issues are also adding to the burden.

Income zero, outgoings pretty much undiminished apart from the power bill.

So we think we are hard done by because we can't spend millions any more!

Knew this was coming...

"Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano says the English Football League was not a sustainable business even before the coronavirus crisis and suggests now is the time to look at a restructure, including the introduction of B teams."

Meanwhile, yesterday the Telegraph were reporting this...

"EFL chiefs' fears of a Championship breakaway are growing after angry club bosses met over their failure to secure a bailout for struggling sides, reports claim.

Leading figures in English football's second tier held talks Tuesday to vent their fury at both the Premier League and EFL over a deal to help the pyramid survive amid the ongoing financial crisis posed by COVID-19, according to the Telegraph. "

It goes on to talk about our own Stephen Pearce as a key figure in a meeting taking place tomorrow.

Yeah, saw this trending on twitter earlier and it was getting about the kind of replies you'd imagine from (I guess) fans of Championship teams.

Self serving bamford.

Man City are massive you know.   About 40 years and no cups till 2012 plus a stint in the third tier. No bigger than us and smaller than many.

I do think it's the trade the PL will ask for in exchange for a bailout.

Will the EFL go for it? (TBH they probably have little choice)
