After watching the Bosman documentary on BT Sports, do we really think that football can make its own rules up regarding employment of foreign nationals that is totally different to the rules for everyone else? Seems mad that there is a huge difference in the requirements for a footballer compared to other international skilled workers. I believe that there will be some changes or relaxation to the ruling before too long.

Football haven't made up their own rules. These rules were negotiated with the government. If anything, it's actually much easier to bring in a footballer from abroad than other professions.

Fair enough. But it seems tailored towards the big teams/star players who will have more freedom and the clubs in the leagues below having to pay premiums for home grown talent. Clubs should be able to employ the best talent they can afford, but it feels as though this might skewer transfers again.

Quite. But restricting migration and moving to a points based system was a key tenet of Brexit. Now we have it, we all have to make the best of the consequences and find creative ways to get talent in other ways.

For football clubs that is likely to be scouting and academies. For regular businesses, expect the government to be pushing apprenticeships and so on.

Bosman may not be enforceable after January 1st.

Unfortunately the FA have took the points system from the DWP and tightened it.

They have only asked THE DWP if they have to equalise it with their previous non EU system and the government has said yes they will have to anyway to avoid anti discrimination laws.

Also in my day job we are actively recruiting EU based engineers, as they easily achieve the requirements under the new points system and are much cheaper to employ than UK based ones
