Seaside Ram
Was I the only one thinking that should've happened after that blunder Saturday ? He head had clearly gone . If an outfield player was all over the place like that he would be hooked immediately especially with 5 subs . Does anyone recall that ever happening ? baiano27
Last one I remember was Hoult coming in for Sutton at half time away at Sheffield United in 1995/96 season. Can't recall if Sutton was playing badly (I think we were actually winning at HT) but the manager expected a bombardment in the 2nd half and Hoult was better at dealing with high balls. QuitYourJibbaJivin
Me and my old were talking about this during the game on Saturday. After he nearly chucked a second into his net I thought it could be the time to bring him off. I mean we’ve got 5 subs so why not? He probably wouldn’t have been happy but I’d be massively surprised if he plays for us again anyway. I know people roll their eyes when any criticism is point towards the specialists coaches but questions must be asked of Shay Given. I understand our goalkeepers aren’t the best but they don’t seem to have improved at all during his time here, they’re still making the same hashes they were previously. If the team is crap the manager gets the flack, but some if not most of this has to fall with Shay.

If the team is crap the manager gets the flack, but some if not most of this has to fall with Shay. Questions can and definitely should be asked of Shay, but that has to be done against asking if these keepers are capable of doing any different? A decision could have been made for them to stay on their lines at set pieces, and to punch and not catch, because trying to train them to come and be dominant simply isn’t going to produce any positive results. Hamer’s mistake against Brentford was unfortunate, but I don’t think you can blame the coaching for it. Mistakes like the one vs Reading raise more questions about Given, but it also must be asked should we not expect a player who can’t get into a relegation threatened team to be lower on quality? For what it’s worth, I think a lot of Hamer’s problems come from him not being good enough initially being exacerbated by his confidence being shot. The coaching seems to be in line with what modern keepers do, reflex saves and punching over catching. Our keepers don’t do things too differently to other keepers in the league. RamNut
Goalkeeping is a dying art. keepers used to come and catch high crosses...And corners they were expected not only to save shots but to hold onto the ball. and whatever happened to drop kicks? Stive Pesley
I suppose you have to be pragmatic. Players make mistakes in every game. Almost every game since he's been here I've seen Rooney misplace a pass straight to an opponent. Difference is that keepers' mistakes more often than not result in goals Watched MOTD last night and Danish International, Premier League-winning keeper Schmeichel let one in under his body and then was nutmegged for another. All keepers make howlers. Yes, I think we urgently need a better keeper for next season - but we'd all be ecstatic if we signed Schmeichel. TheresOnlyWanChope
Hamer is being made a scapegoat for the defeat. All goalkeepers make mistakes. It is not his fault our playoff hopes have probably ended. It is self inflicted as a team. I've seen strikers miss sitters. Everyone forgets any positive contribution he has made to this team which is sad.

I'm guessing that it's because the balls shift in the air like a beach ball that they're told to punch if unsure. But with Roos and Hamer they can't even punch. Some things Roos does are just weird. Under arm catching from high balls. They were always taught to catch and hold when I was a kid too. Some good saves now would be called bad saves then. And some good punches now would get you a massive bollocking then for not catching. I remember our Sunday league keeper used to parry everything and pick up the drop. Never failed him but he used to get told off for that! I'm guessing it must be the balls nowadays.
TomG
I think it will be interesting to see if Cocu decides to stick with Ben Hamer for tomorrow nights game at Cardiff, especially when Hamer decided to deleted his Twitter account following the Brentford game due to the amount of abuse he was receiving. I would think that his confidence is now absolutely rock bottom and Roos will probably be hoping that he doesn't get picked because he won't want to become the next target! What a dilemma! But yeah, in the WBA game his good outweighed the bad. Over the season though there's too many spills, drops, miskicks, poor decisions from Roos and Hamer. They can take pressure off the team but too often apply more. Saving shots going wide and punching for corners/throws. Defenders taking responsibility when the keeper should be screaming authority. Just too many little hiccups on top of the obvious howlers that all keepers make I'm not saying they're the worst in the world. But I do think they add pressure by being unpredictable. Moments like Saturday happen to the best of them. But this week has seen bizarre punches, the Forest shot, the WBA corner, the Brentford 2nd and he saved a couple of shots going wide by WBA. I know Grant had an awful spell but he had a hamstring injury at the time. Plus, I'd say that spell sticks in the memory because it was quite unusual for him. With Hamer and Roos I think it's over a longer period of time.

Millenniumram
I don’t recall it ever happening apart from in the case of injury, or before a penalty shootout. You’ve got to have serious balls to sub your goalie off as a manager, but I think it’s sometimes the right call. Hamer was quite clearly in a total mess at the weekend and we were fortunate he didn’t cost us any more goals. Roos should have come on imo.
