v Preston (A) - Matchday Thread

If he plays Shinnie in place of Lawrence Davies will have an extra option for the short pass.

If he's pressured and has to hoof it, so be it.

He's experienced enough to keep it simple.

Evans is a defensive midfield player.

Davies is a centre half.

That’s like saying we should play Davies instead of Wisdom because Wisdom can also play right back, we’ve seen Evans play well at centre half on multiple occasions.

I don't agree.

I'm saying you pick specialist players for specialist positions.

Evans had one good game against Bristol City and has been a bit part player ever since.

Curtis Davies is a former international who plays centre half.

He may not be first choice but has always been Cocu's go to when we have needed to boost our defence.

Evans has been anonymous in nearly every game he’s played in midfield for us. He’s been solid in nearly every game he’s played CB for us. He’s far more suited to our style of play than Davies is, and I think he should replace Wisdom.

Cocu will almost certainly start Davies though.

Well, it looks like recent events have forced us to change our team yet again for this game.... we really haven’t had any luck this season. It’s been utterly bizarre. I don’t think we have much choice but to go with something like this now:

Hamer

Bogle Davies Clarke Forsyth

Bird Rooney

Waghorn Sibley Holmes

Martin

Having to play Davies instead of Wisdom definitely weakens us, especially in terms of pace, but I don’t see what other choice we have sadly.

Evans is a CDM, he shouldn’t be played at CB unless it really is an absolute emergency. Whilst we have Davies fit he should be playing as it’s his natural position.

Players can't adapt to new positions? Wisdom should never have played at RB, Rooney should still be a CF, etc...?

Rubbish. Evans has had a lot of good performances at CB before. He was a man mountain at Bristol City last season.

Of course they can, but it usually takes weeks if not months of hard work in training to make the transition - I very much doubt 2 days between matches will be enough time to prepare. If Evans was being re-trained as a centre back, he’d have played there already this season given our defensive issues. You only have to look at the absolute catastrophe of Forsyth at CB to see the dangers of playing players out of position in such an important role in the team.

Yet he couldn't get in instead of Wis. If he was anything other than occasional he'd be already there now.

Name me another (which isn’t a friendly)?

One good game at CB doesn’t make a player a CB. Forsyth was excellent in his first game in central defence against Preston, but was then a disaster waiting to happen for the following 6/7 games before Clarke returned.

Wisdom was pretty good there. Kept his slot because he played well. It makes much more sense to put Evans there than Davies.

I vaguely remember him having some games that he was good at CB, but I couldn't name you them. They didn't leave that much of an imprint on me. Evans is much better on the ball than Forsyth. And both are better on the ball than Curtis.

The question is would you want us to continue to play out from the back with Curtis in the side or would you prefer us to play the longer game and battle for second balls in midfield & up front?

If Evans was any good he'd have got in before Wis is the point, plus he'd get on instead of Davies when Bogle gets subbed and Wis put RB.

If Chris Martin was any good, he’d have got in before Vydra, James Wilson, Nugent and Waghorn at in recent years.
