So why did the ref point at his watch and his earpiece if he wasn’t ducking his responsibilities? He even has a screen at the side of the pitch that he could have looked at, but he decided to play on because the tech didn’t tell him to stop. The ref should be deciding when he needs help to make a decision and using all of the tools at his disposal to make the right decision - last night he failed to do that - mainly as a result of the way VAR has been implemented to oversee him rather than help....

My thoughts exactly.  Should've known the players wouldn't have appealed if they weren't sure. as normally they'd be wasting their time.  Could've just halted the game, checked the pitch side monitor, then given the goal, would've taken 60 seconds.  They have to assume more responsibility.  Same goes for those sat in the VAR bunker.

Really? They appeal for everything ffs! The ref wouldn't have known there was anything 'wrong' no buzz, no word from VAR (that was why he tapped his earpiece, no?). But the guys in the VAR booth have no excuse.

Players know not to bother with goal line stuff nowadays as they know it's, supposedly, infallible.  Look at any goal line incident over the past few seasons and there's a token appeal at best.  Last night they all knew it.

It seems the only person who knew for sure, kept his eyes and gob shut, and took a deep breath, as he was literally holding the ball behind the bloody post, trying to avoid getting entangled on the inside of the side netting!

He could play for us, he was so bloody sheepish!   ?

He was pointing out that he had no signal from the goal line technology and nothing from the VAR official.

It was their responsibility not his.

And there's me thinking that the ref is responsible for enforcing the laws of the game. If he had any doubt in his mind, he had trhe absolute right to stop the game and check - he failed to do that (because of his incorrect belief that the technology cannot get things wrong) so cannot be absolved of all blame as you seem to think.

I have a lot of sympathy for refs due to the farcical way that VAR has been implemented (I said at the beginning of this experiment that the ref should have the discretion to use the technology when he sees fit (unless he and his assistants miss an obvious off the ball incident) rather than be subservient to a remote referee and a video camera), but the buck has to stop somehwere and last nights catalogue of errors was ultimately for Michael Oliver (by far one of the best refs around) to sort out.....

Problem is now they know it’s fallible, they’ll be appealing every incident and we’ll have more var stoppages just to double check it.
