Euro 96

Being repeated on itv4. England v Switzerland was on last night. This was nearly 24 years ago! One thing I noticed (apart from the footie!) is that how little people (fashions, hair styles, attitude etc) have changed since then compared to today. Also not much has changed in our lives really...tech has been improved upon I suppose. But going back 24 years from 1996 to 1972...massive change.

I was in London and bumped into some German fans who said they might have a spare ticket for the semi final. One of their mates might not show up. I was to meet then at Wembley stadium the day of the match and take my chance. So i turned up, met them again and the ticket was mine. I had to sit with the Germans. Incredible night. Shearer scored our end, Gaza missed our end and the penalty shoot out was our end. German fans were ok with me cheering for England. They were a good bunch and consoled me at the end of the game. Great memories even given the result.

It has.... I’ve been born. The world changed for the better that day.

It's not as bad as Julian... or even Nigel, for that matter!

I remember getting the Holland tickets and we were all complaining because they were 45 each....thinking about It, even now that sounds expensive, It must have been a fortune in 96... but goodness was that 45 pound well spent.

Meanwhile, I was at Villa Park.

Everyone was reacting to the fans in the corporate boxes who were watching the England game and jumping up and down after every goal. We thought we were through.

Then Seaman let one through his legs......

Brilliant tournament once we left London. We had a ball of a time in Birmingham and Nottingham for 10 days.

Why were they doing that?

Dont know. It came accross loud and clear on the TV on Monday. Never heard it before or since.

They maybe hadn't learned the words to 3 lions yet, ?

My mate messaged me after the Switzerland game was shown. He said he couldn't believe how bad the football was back then. Initially I wasn't having it. The tournament was full of legends.

But having watched two and a bit games from the tournament already I can see what he's saying. Poor touches, misplaced passes, poor shots, etc. Granted the ball they played with you could liken to the 1940s leather balls compared to the 'floaters' they play with now, not to mention the baggy kits and lack of science, but the game has moved on so far that if those players were around now and in that condition they'd struggle in the Championship.

But would I swap now for then? in a heartbeat. You could relate to the players a lot more and football was football and not business.
