ADVANTAGES TO THE HIATUS IN THE SEASON

GB SPORTS

Trying to give some thought to using the pause in the season as an opportunity to improve things ref Derby or football in general.

As per Rooney's article it could give us an opportunity to line the seasons up with World Cup in 2022 and then claw back a month every closed season until we are back to square one again ( I haven't given a thought to any other consequences of this).

My example is more partisan than this, a month or two's break now will give the PP pitch the chance to recover a little and the another break from say August to January should be ample time to restore it to it's former health.

As anyone got any suggestions that would help clubs make the best out of a difficult situation.

Injuries is the big one. Any player currently out with anything other than a real long term injury is likely to be fit when we resume play - for us, that means we’ll have the likes of Holmes and Huddlestone fit and available, which could be a big boost. If it takes until September as some rumours are suggesting, then even long term absentees might return. For example, it’s not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that we have Bielik available for the last 9 games of the season. Having him at centre back could be game changing.

If it was September, could Te Wierik be with us by then?

In theory he would be contracted to us, so he would be “our player” - but he won’t be registered to play in the league as we won’t have had a registration window, assuming they move the transfer window, which I expect they will.

Since it's reported that coronavirus will only peak in a few months time, it's hard to see anymore games being played this season. One possible advantage to that is if we could take our points deduction this season. As things stand today (if it were 12 points), it appears we would escape relegation by goal difference, resulting in a clean slate for next seasons push for promotion.

Not been here for a while. Have we been given a points deduction?

This would be the same for every club. (Different players of course).

So although our squad may be or appear to be stronger, so would the rest

Indeed so. Still, some teams will have worse injury lists than others, and will benefit more from the gap in play.

Pride Park attendances will increase.

We will all be twice the size and need to buy two tickets to sit down comfortably.

....then surely the attendances will decrease.

Rooney’s ideas on this are quite interesting. Playing a full season within a Calendar year could be quite good. Late Jan start, mid season break in the summer  for rest and tournaments and  Season finale on Boxing Day.

Similar opportunity missed at youth level. Could've changed the schedule to have the break in winter instead of summer. The amount of matchdays called off in winter due to waterlogged/frozen pitches makes it impossible to ever complete a season.
