Duane Holmes

I’m not one for frivolous thread creation, but he really does deserve his own thread.

He was absolutely outstanding tonight. His performance on the ball was as good as any from last season, but what impressed me most was his defensive nous. Gallagher was running the show in the first half, but Holmes completely pocketed him in the second. All the kicking, pushing, chirping and hair stroking amounted to poohousery of the highest and most effective order.

Even more impressive is the fact that he did that in a team of ten men and was in the middle of a flat four across the middle - a role which he’s neither used to or physically suited to.

More of that and he’ll be my favourite player again.

Let’s carry that on please, Duane.

I agree. He was outstanding tonight. MOM in my opinion.

Brilliant performance. He was EVERYWHERE tonight, won tackles, broke up play, and then drove forward dribbling past players like they weren't even there. Ran himself into the ground. Lovely ball back to Bird in the build up to the second goal. Tonight was the level of performance we know Holmes can produce but he's struggled to replicate it so far this season.

I'd honestly give his performance a 10/10. It was thoroughly brilliant.

Not fully agreed. First of all, as Carson is gone he is by far my favorite player and now without Lawrence got the role he is best at.

Secondly, he is perfectly suited to two man midfield. So much energy, so eager and good in tackle, so low gravity... I could go on and on. You don't see him shaken off the ball without foul often, do you?

Tonight he was simply ridiculously good.

He's such an interesting player.

It's hard to say for sure, not being him, if that performance was more due to him just feeling it today, or on the change in personnel around him. If its the former its on him to get in that mood more often but I suspect the latter; as he put in similar performances more often than not last season and last seasons team had a lot of energy.

If that is the case, I am really optimistic for him moving forward.

Humourous side-note: That game was on ESPN in the states. USMNT fans once again find themselves seeing a great Holmes performance, missing all of poo ones, and being left wondering why the hell is in't playing for them ?

What I meant by that comment was that you don’t see many people of his stature playing as a CM in a 4-4-2, especially when partnered with a 19 year old.

Also, in this modern world of 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-1-2-1-2 and 3-5-2, he usually has a bit more defensive support alongside or behind him. He’s not used to playing as a central midfielder in a flat midfield four (at Derby at least), which makes his performance all the more impressive.

I think it has more to do with him having room to slalom through their midfiedl. If there is attacking midfielder more, there's is bound to be one opposition more as well. Too tight to pass them by running and that's what he does. I wouldn't won't Rooney as attacking midfielder, just put him up top with Marriott.
