I wouldn't be so sure Hughes isn't in Pearson's plans. He featured in all (and started in most) of the games under Pearson's tenure but was 'wasted' in a more defensive midfield role...

...pretty similar to the one he had under Rowett and would inhabit under Cocu? Or perhaps we'd use him as a sort of RW similar to how Watford have, which is also the position he was in when he first broke through to the first team.

I say wasted, however he was still trying to find his feet after coming back from his ACL injury at the time so maybe playing him deeper was necessary.

Although he's playing at a higher level now he never really has been the same player, he's just talented enough to have adapted his game.
