RamNut
This is how I see it.... Two triangles - one on the left, one of the right - involving the full back, the winger, and a supporting midfield link man The choice is then where to play the 11th man. 4 options between the centre backs - the 3 at the back option which allows the wing backs to push on in holding midfield -which allows the central midfielders to push on and protects the centre backs the no10 - the deep lying striker playing in the hole a second striker What’s interesting is the options that don’t exist. playing two holding midfielders playing a holding midfielder and a no10 ...and even worse playing two holding midfielders and a no10 The latter three options just knacker the midfield - as you have to sacrifice the orthodox midfield link men for defensive midfielders or attacking midfielders, and this makes it harder to get up the pitch. Effectively the team loses the all important midfield triangles and so reverts to a rowett hoof or the full backs have to progress up the pitch without much help (Cocu). we seem to like to play the mac1 system with one holding midfield player. That seems like a good starting point. The players that should be a natural fit are highlighted. 1 Roos or Mitchell or hamer 2 bogle 3 lowe or malone 4 wisdom or davies 5 bielik or Evans or huddlestone 6 fozzy 7 Lawrence or Bennett or jozefzoon or Mitchell-lawson or holmes 8 Holmes or knight or paterson 9 Martin or waghorn or Marriott or rooney 10 Shinnie or dowell or sibley 11 we haven’t really got one...maybe whittaker Or jozefzoon out of position Thats as good as we have got. after that it’s about getting better players. Ghost of Clough
We seem to be playing a version of 4231 which is almost a 442 and almost 433). Using the QPR lineup, we see: 4231 Holmes Evans Bogle Lawrence Waghorn Marriott 442 Bogle Holmes Evans Waghorn Marriott Lawrence 433 Evans Holmes Lawrence Bogle Waghorn Marriott We've been lining up this way for a while now (flirting with a diamond for a short period). Even in pre-season we saw Marriott and Bennett in the Lawrence role, and Paterson played it on a couple of occasions when he was in the team. europia
There is only so much you can do with formation tweaks. If you don't have quality players, changing formation could have an adverse effect. Performance against QPR a prime example. As my grandad used to say. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear (or something along those lines...) The Scarlet Pimpernel
Yep, it's players not systems that need to come first. Systems merely enhance what good players can do. RiddingsRam
I always like talking tactics , formations and shapes etc etc ..... It's the main thing I watch when I'm watching a game . Although I do like a Dutch 4-3-3 with the current squad and even the development of the modern game I think a fluid 3-4-3 is the way to go ! *Firstly we don't have any decent wingers ... Any , we haven't got one natural winger that's anywhere near the first team *Our full backs love to bomb forward as many do these days *We have a lot of players who can play the "10" role *Will suit Rooney just fine . Hamer Wisdom. Davies. Forsyth Bogle. Shinnie. Bielik. Lowe Rooney. Lawrence Martin Link to comment https://dcfcfans.uk/topic/33863-formation/#findComment-1782483 Share on other sites
