What we need is an experienced player with both international and Premier League quality, who is a dead ball specialist, who can also pass through the eye of a needle, give the team some cohesion and leadership and score a few goals................?

I think Alan's too old now.

Sensible decision.

If signing Rooney isnt enough to drag us into the play offs then we arent good enough.

Wait until the summer and re-assess rather than waste money in January.

Too much to expect Rooney to have that kind of impact. Our position in the league table is a reflection of the performance of the team and individuals. Strengthen the squad or wait 3 or 4 seasons to see what youth can achieve.

We still need wingers and centre backs. But financially we probably can’t afford to do much.

Not sure how much we really need wingers right now though, between lawrence/zoon/waghorn/JML/Whittaker/Bennett and Paterson then that should be more than enough.

This is likely what Cocu meant when he said he didn't want to block youth coming through.

Cocu's interview was all about bringing youth through, having teams play with a style/vision/cohesion and coaching the players to fit into that...

Aside from Bogle,  youth (Knight, Sibley, Whittaker etc) haven't had much opportunity so far. Waghorn, Dowell, Flojo, Paterson, Wisdom, Anya have been particularly poor or unused and need fresh impetus... Lawrence, Bielik, Martin, Marriott, Holmes seem to be starting to adapt and now need to kick on...

Would be massively surprising and hypocritical to just go out and buy a ton of readymade.players. Trim those he thinks just aren't ever going to cut it and embed what he is doing.. with Rooney to come in and maybe a centre back on loan would show he means what he says.

Lawrence isn’t a winger. Nor is waghorn. Nor is Whittaker imo.

Zoon probably needs to be swapped or moved on.

Mitchell-Lawson is hopefully good for the future but seems not to feature at present

Neither Bennett or Paterson are left sided.

One really decent winger could transform this side.

I'm struggling to remember a January signing that actually worked and brought value for money.  Maybe Dawkins as he officially signed after his loan spell?

I’m struggling to name any signing that has been value for money over the past 5 years.

I think personally we should bring in a defender on loan, play George Evans there until then.

Max Hunt comes back off loan from the 5th tier in Jan, Burton may be willing to offer him a loan til the end of the saeson?

Then, if he's proved he's good enough, give ol' Hunty a go.

Honestly hes a brick wall from what I've seen, watched him first at Matlock, have high hopes for the guy.

Cameron Jerome started scoring and secured us play-offs during Rowett's full season.

Ultimately he did but when we signed him and played him we went from fairly free scoring and defending well to not scoring or looking not likely to score but still defending ok

We do need someone different at centre back to be available so we either go and get someone ( on loan probably) or we take the option of using either the youngster ( Hunt) or the recovering Forsyth or Wisdom to fill in  - during a game I see no problem with the likes of Evans or Belick filling in but I don’t want them starting games at centre back.

if we are able to return Dowell we should if we are not using him and I am sure Everton would want him elsewhere and Paterson has been ok but are we looking at him long term ? I think not as we should give opportunity to what we have coming through

2015 was alright. Signed quality cover for Fozzy in Warnock, Best out and Bent in, efficiently replaced Ibe and covered for the grieving Dawkins with Ince and Lingard, Albentosa who, despite performances, we doubled our money on.

Unfortunately the injuries hit harder than we could have ever prepared for but even so, Bent and Ince kept our season alive.

I was on about permanent signings.  Admittedly, we have done ok with loans during Januarys...
