They could have been "drunk" without actually being drunk.

Different people have different levels of tolerance to alcohol, it could be a case of that the drink that these had put them over the drink driving limit without actually affecting their driving ability. Most people would have had a drink or two and still felt sober, it wouldn't affect your reflexes, judgement etc but you could still blow over the limit on a breathalyser.

Let's just wait until all the facts come to light before we go hanging our own players. Then let the club deal with it in the way it deems fit.

The words used were 'drunk' rather than 'in drink'. (which I think is what you are trying to say). The fact is on what we know, they are very fortunate we are not talking about 'one of our own' (ie. a fan) being injured in this idiotic incident.

Would you expect to be sacked from your job if you were caught drink driving?

What they've done is awful and they should be punished for it. But let's try not go over-the-top here, as bad as what they have done is.

Agreed. Tony Adams went to prison for Arsenal and still played for them when he got out. Let’s not over react. Would people be calling for them to be sacked if it was Marriott and Bogle? Doubt it.

If they go down then sack them regardless of who they are.

I absolutely can't stand drink driving, in any way.

As per usual though, this forum is full of hypocrisy. Presumably all of you calling for them both to be sacked are also 100% against the Rooney signing, and will have clearly said so when he was signed?

Didn't think so.

I may have been one of the only people that wasn't and isn't that fussed about Rooney (would much preferred a season long loan and invested in the next 'mount' or 'wilson').  The key point for me (if you can call it that) is that this has happened whilst they are 'representing' Derby County.

Bennett and Lawrence - there was some debate earlier about  naming them

I must admit when I quoted you earlier in the thread the impression I got from you was a kind of let those who is without sin cast the first stone situation thus you were defending their actions, maybe I got it wrong but I still think a twenty something footballer these days has had tons more guidance on the dangers of drink/drug driving that a twenty something ordinary lad had in my day.

In that case you did get it wrong. I was not defending their actions. I said that they would have to take the punishment meted out by the law and the club (presuming their guilt, which is not yet established). In another post I said that they would be under considerable pressure and grief from their wives, families, the PFA and colleagues.  They will absolutely know the enormity of what they've done.  Good. It'll help them not to do it again.

My wider point is that people, often young people and often young men, make mistakes in their lives. They do stupid things. I know I have and perhaps you and most people on this forum have too.  Sometimes (mostly) you get away with those errors, sometimes you don't.  When you don't you have to take the consequences. But that shouldn't mean that they should be treated differently just because they kick a bag of wind around and earn more than average, neither should we be so quick to judge other people - footballers or not - by standards that most of us couldn't meet and neither should we be quick to want to ruin careers and reputations before we've heard the full story.

As a young lad at school I had tons of advice - films/test tubes full of tar the lot - outlining the dangers of smoking.  It didn't stop me ending up with a 40 a day habit until I quit 30 years ago. Athletes in lots of sports receive advice and guidance about betting and gambling. It doesn't stop people getting caught for doing just that. They get more advice and lists and tests about performance enhancing drugs.  Doesn't stop that from happening, sometimes by mistake. Social media is littered with examples of people including sports people being crucified for the most minor things despite all the guidance there is around.  People make mistakes.

In no way am I religious but the quote about casting the first stone was about an allegedly adulterous woman and the men accusing her melting away when challenged by Jesus - 'He who is without sin among you, let him cast a stone at her'.  None did.   It's not a bad metaphor for the current situation. Let the law and the club's processes take its course and be grateful that your (and mine) errors weren't found out quite so publicly

The police tweet describes them both as being "drunk".  I assume that means they were over the limit, for a breath test?

Limits are there for a reason.  Regardless of whether some folk "can drink more than others".  Regardless of whether they drank a lager-top over the limit, or a couple of bottles of scotch over the limit, they were over the legal limit.  They have broken the law... or rather they have been accused of doing so... we'll have to wait for any court rulings of course.
They have embarrassed themselves.  They have embarrassed their employers, their peers, and their families.  Luckily, they have caused no physical harm to anyone, but that appears to be down to pure luck alone.
I'd hate to see DCFC suffer because of this.  I'd hate to see us fans suffer because of this.  For those reasons, I'm loathe to call for them to be sacked/contracts cancelled.  I'd be more than happy to see them both suffer though, be that financially, or boo'd to buggery should they show their faces on Saturday!
I cannot deny, I too have driven after partaking.  Maybe no more than a pint and a half (max) over 3 hours or so, or perhaps a "large" rum and coke throughout a similar period.  (anything more, and my car remains out of the equation).  I ain't no saint, and I've absolutely no idea how that would have affected my driving and/or any breath test, suffice to say I've always got home safely, and never taken a breath test.

As a Rams fan, I am somewhat pissed off at these two at the moment, for embarrassing the club... at a time when we could well do without it!
As a father and a sibling, I am somewhat angry that they have put themselves in a position where they could have harmed somebody's child, somebody's parent, or somebody's sibling... but equally relieved that they haven't!

All in all... It's a bad show, fella's... and you have acted like a pair of complete and utter cockwombles!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Absolutely sick of seeing this. Calling the fans who want these out hypocrites because they are happy with the Rooney signing.

Rooney got arrested for drink driving 2 years ago. This has absolutely nothing to do with us. He wasn't at the club. Didn't drag our club in the mud, didn't create bad headlines for the club.

Lawrence and Bennett are Derby players. The headlines start "Derby County players arrested for drink driving" Their actions have dragged the clubs name through the mud and making headlines for the wrong reasons.

If Rooney gets arrested for drink driving like these 2 have when he's here. I would absolutely be saying he should be sacked. It's despicable what they have done.

I would, it’s not about the players ability, it’s about the way they’ve been conducting themselves. And anyway, even if you do rate the player, surely there’s an argument that having that sort of Person in the changing room isn’t exactly good for building a hard working, focused team.

Saunders was jailed for failing to give a breathalyser on top of being drunk whilst driving

My understanding... rightly or wrongly... was that he was charged, and jailed, for not providing a breath sample.  Strictly speaking... in the eyes of the law, (if not in the eyes of the video audience!), nobody knows whether he was "drunk whilst driving".  That's the whole point of the subsequent charge, and the subsequent jail sentence.

I think the state of the cars suggest the alcohol did affect their driving ability.

Id also argue that even after 1 pint everyone's driving ability gets affected.

It amazes me the amount of people who think 2 pints after work and jump in their car is ok. Give it 30 mins and you could blow a positive breath test.

I know someone who was sacked from their job for drink driving. Surely not that unusual? Plenty of HR related info out there

I see where you're coming from, but why should we treat the lads to a drink as a reward for performance?

What makes alcohol such a reward? You wouldn't place a mound of Cocaine on the back of the team bus and invite the lads to tuck in after a good win, yet it would probably be healthier than a session on the booze.

I don't find pictures of massive bar bills from a pub, videos of our Captain massively pissed singing Karaoke, or videos of players drunkenly arguing with fans outside a city centre Casino after a charity gala at all amusing, even less so when I'm told that the reason the players lost an important away game at Boro was because they were so pissed after their Christmas party, despite flying up there on chartered jets as a treat from the owner.

All of the above actions I would eagerly indulge in myself of course, but I'm not an elite athlete trying to be the best version of myself, after having beaten off 99.5% of the opposition vying for my job.

I agree with pretty much all of this. I’d like to think that if I were in such a priveliged position then I’d be able to lay off the booze 11 months at a time until I retired, let alone a week or so before a Play Off final.

However, the ‘drunken arguing’, as suggested by another poster, seemed to be ‘fans’ having a pop and the players ignoring them. I seriously doubt that Craig Forsyth would ever initiate such a thing.

Out of curiosity... How many blokes did Lawrence and Bennett have to beat off to get their jobs?

There was quite a few posts around the time of the signing saying exactly that. Not specifically drunk driving, but a bad influence on the dressing room.
