Recrutiment Needed or Not?

Think we’ve got the nucleus of a good championship side:

Bogle, Keogh, Clarke, Lowe, Bielek, Huddlestone, Holmes, Lawrence, Waghorn, Marriott. + Rooney from January.

Think we’ve got some decent squad options:

Davies, Buchanan, Wisdom, Evans, Shinnie, Paterson, Knight, Dowell, Bennett, Martin, Mitchell-Lawson

We should be able to carve out a team capable of success at this level out of these players in my opinion. Whether that success takes us to the premier league may rely on whether or not we can plug some gaps with some real quality (CM and a Winger) but there’s certainly enough there to get us moving up the division. Evolution not revolution.

Getting so many players off our wage bill this summer was going to leave us short of first team numbers and the loans returning was always going to leave us short of a bit of quality.

I genuinely think we’re 3 shrewd signings away from a side that could challenge at the very top of the division. A GK, a CM and an actual Winger.

A lot of posters on here far more insightful then myself said at the start of the summer we were short of a goalkeeper centre midfielder and a winger yet nothing came to fruition.

What is it that those posters can see that the club can't?

Mostly agree. Only what Lampard did really with Mount, Wilson and Tomori as his 3 shrewd signings.

Unfortunately they we’re loans and head and shoulders above what he/our recruitment also went and invested.

Malone, Zoon plus we overpaid in my opinion for Waghorn and possibly Marriott means a further 7-8 million of Mel’s money was unwisely spent when we should have got better.

It’s no wonder the emphasis is on youth, but we certainly need some very wise recruitment and in key positions come January.

Cheers

How very dare you suggest Snip wasn't a snip. Lampards loans were excellent, his signings not so. I wonder who takes the blame for the latter?

The posters can’t see where the club is with FFP though.

But we spent £10 million on one player and yet you're saying that we couldn't have afforded the goal keeper winger etc for that amount?

Maybe the transfer fee isn’t the issue though, the 10 million can be spread over the contract period, wages can’t.

Of course I’m guessing, but also the targets seemed to change after the Rooney announcement, Cocu was implying that we would have our deals done prior to the madness of the deadline day, this changed, did we spend the remainder of our budget on WRs wages ?

Need another striker.

Marriott is our only 'natural' goalscorer and his fitness is iffy. Waghorn is a 15 a season man at best.

Without Mount and Wilson we don't have many goalscoring options from midfield.

Can't see any of our U23s stepping up in the striking role, though Mitchell-Lawson looks good out wide.

Rooney will help but for me we need another centre forward.

Not sure if we need another striker but Okazaki has just been released by Malaga. He knows the East Midlands well. I think he'd be amazing in the Championship.

I'd like to see us bring in Markel Susaeta.

I know very little about him other than he's been a good servant for Bilbao for many years. However, what I do know about the bloke is that he was their, or at least one of their, set piece specialist. If you look on whoscored you will see that he has to 'positives' - crossing and set pieces.

We're woefully poor, and I can't stress that enough, at both of them. No idea why he's still a free agent, but he seems like a decent fit for what we need.  Jozefzoon is yet to hit a man with a cross in nearly 20 attempts. Lawrence has had 13 attempts, hit his man twice.

We need help, if not chuck Mitchell-Lawson in and see if we can't atleast fast track his progression.

Mate Susaeta is quality

I do think the club highlighted these areas too. Carson sent out on loan suggested to me that another keeper would come in... I think Hamer and Paterson were very low down the lists of targets but still highlighted the clubs opinion that we needed another winger and goalkeeper.
