Calum Macdonald - Signed for Blackpool

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Excellent runner from left back, drives into the box and gets past players with ease at U23 level, clearly has good technical ability as shown by some of his free kicks (that said, I think Jamie Hanson even once had a reputation as a set piece specialist at youth level).

I'd hope it is just a loan but yes, if he's not going to overtake any of our existing LBs....

Disappointed we’ve let him go on a permanent at his age, he still had potential to me, would have rather have seen him haven’t loan at league one level if he’s at that level then come back for the first team. Never mind I guess, good luck Calum, do the Derby academy proud!

I've said it before and will almost certainly do so again - I'll leave that down to the management teams - I've seen the lad for a handfull of minutes but Wassall will be aware of his ability etc and whether we should let him go - Between them Cocu and team + Wassall and team have decided Buchanan comes ahead of him in the push for first team football so I'll go with their judgement on this one - Plus he's about the same age as Lowe who's also ahead of him - And oh yeh, we have about a million left backs 😄

Am I right in thinking he's had no first team appearances for us?

No first team appearances no, but was an unused substitute on a few occasions under Lampard so he has made the 18-Man match day squad, including during the playoffs.

Yeah they’ve obviously made the decision that he’d never gonna make it, certainly not ahead of other players. And I have to agree that Lowe is obviously the far greater talent (our best LB imo) and Buchanan looks a talent too (though his best position is unclear yet). Both obviously made it to the first team squad properly before macdonald. And obviously I agree we’ve got too many first team left backs anyway.

Its just that, imo, I consider youngsters a bit differently. If I was in charge of the club, when assessing young players I’d worry less about how many players are ahead of them in the first team, and more about whether they’re going to make it, and probably most importantly, whether they’re at maximum value. The former I think is hard to judge without some decent loans first to see where they are currently, and whether they have enough development time to make it to our level. So I’d have preferred to see him loaned to league one before being sold like i said. The second point is more a business perspective. A lot of prem clubs are quite good at making money out of their academy which helps towards FFP- they do that by selling their youngsters after a number of loans spells when they reach maximum proven value, even if they’re never likely to make it at their level. I think this is a good, albeit risky, strategy to take, and I’d like to see us follow it. Naturally, deciding when a player has peaked is hard and risky, and the club probably have decided macdonald has hit peak value- I trust wassells judgement there like you do. Just a point on academy strategy really, I think Mel has said similar before.

Yeh, I get it and see the merit - But I don't like it - I guess I'm a bit of a purist in that I want to use the academy to fuel the first team mostly - And anyone we can help get a career in football not at Derby all the better for them - At 21 a player should be making serious inroads to establishing themselves in the squad picture for a senior side - I'd rather let them go and have a crack at that than 2-3 more years of loans - Sometimes dropping down on a permanent contract will give them more hunger/desire to prove themselves - I'd rather players looked back on Derby with fond memories than "they held me on with a promise for far too long" and be bitter towards us

Really enjoyed watching you play for the U23s last season.

Hope this is the right move for you, good luck.

FWIW  - I would have gambled and played you in the playoff final.
