Current Squad

So are we happy with the current squad? Probably see a few players still leave this month.

GK - Roos Hamer Mitchell [Ravas]

RB - Bogle Wisdom (Holmes) [Bateman]

CB - Keogh Clarke Davies (Evans, Bielek) [Buchanan]

LB - Malone Lowe Forsyth (Shinnie) [Macdonald]

CDM - Bielik Huddlestone Evans Thorne [Bird]

CM - Dowell Holmes Shinnie Rooney Knight [Sibley, Bird]

RM/LM - Lawrence Paterson Jozefzoon Bennett Anya (Holmes, Dowell, Waghorn) [Whittaker]

ST - Waghorn Marriott Martin (Rooney, Bennett)

Can see why we wanted another CAM as we look a little light in there especially until Rooney joins up but in a 4231 we have alot of options for 3 which would cover the need of a CAM

I've been moaning for the past 3 hours don't you worry about it ?

Personally, think our choice on the wings is limited and will have to play waggy put wide again

Decent squad. At least on par with last season, if not better depending on how good Bielik is.

We also have an experienced manager and coaching team with obvious tactical ability. Think we are going to do good.

I quite like the look of the squad. We look strong in most areas. The 2 areas that that have question marks are goal keeper and on the wings.

its up to Roos to prove he is good enough to be number 1 now.

we look ok are the wings, but nothing special. It then comes down to the formation we play. If we play the 2 holding midfielders like against Huddersfield I don’t see it as such a problem, if it becomes 4231, the 3 can play narrower and then the full backs push forward to provide the width. That also plays to our fullbacks strengths.

If Waghorn and Marriott score freely, we will win the League. Sharing goals throughout the team is good especially if the defence is solid but for me we lack a really top class striker. Winning games by the only goal against our top rivals when there is only one good scoring  opportunity wins the league.

It's ok. I think we've had better in recent years but I have faith that Cocu will get a lot out of this squad where others haven't.

I really like the look of Clarke and I believe he could be vital. I know it's too early to say it but if he can apply himself defensively as he did in game 1 then we have another attacking CB but without the cost of too much defensive quality.

One thing Tomori did was allow Derby to be able to attack from all the back 4. No longer limited to Keogh we could now build from either CB. No aimless punts down the line by Fozzy (my only criticism of him). We could play out from the entire backline. My gut feeling is Clarke has kept that going but adds that brute CB presence of Curtis Davies.  Cocu saw it straight away and put Evans there at first because we must be able to attack from the back with balance not just on the right

The other key area was DM. Huddlestone can pass like a world class player when the circumstances suit him. But defensively if he's an inch out of position then he might as well be a mile. To support an attack was to totally expose the backline. To protect a backline was to not support attacks. And at times even when he was in the right place at the right time he was beaten by anyone who could accelerate faster than a bin lorry. We've taken a couple of steps to sort that. Evans was put in straight away to help out. Shinnie can drop in there and obviously we pushed the boat out to sign someone who specialises in that role.

The wings are a concern. But this is the beginning for Cocu. Can't have everything.

Up front... Marriott, Waghorn, Martin and... come on. A football legend on his way. I doubt he will play up front but I think he will completely open up our attacking play and improve all the players in the team.

It lacks depth a bit. But we've targeted key areas. Some concerns are gone and I don't really think we have many new ones. The main concern is no Mason Mount and Wilson. Others will have to step up until January. But some of that can be compensated by how we attack as a team, how we create 2v1, 3v2. We've heard about changes players have made to angles and the way they move the ball.

I'm definitely a happy clapper with the current squad.

I'm interested to see how the midfield evolves. It looks on paper a decent blend to me.

Dowell, Bielik, Holmes, Shinnie, Sibley, Knight .......youth, skill, bit of bite, potential there for a mobile, interchangeable group, perhaps a bit more  tougher for teams to get through than in recent seasons. Hudds maybe will have to settle for cameo appearances?

In defence, Clarke looks a good un to partner Keogh, proper cb, thought he was decent at Huddersfield.

I grew up watching the great Dutch team of the 70's whose fullbacks were often wingers, Total football they called it, every player was comfortable on the ball and capable of fluidly covering the ones who broke forward and vice versa. The dutch copied the Derby team if you ask me, Nish and Webster were as good as Neeskens, Krol etc!

Bogle and Lowe could well provide the width if the system allows them to bomb forward.

There are goals between Waggy, Tom, Jack and Mason if the midfield and wing backs are doing there stuff.

I believe we are very lucky to have Phillip Cocu as our manager. He really should be in the Prem or at a top European club. I think he will organise the players available to him to play some good exciting football. We saw glimpses Monday night, a free role for Lawrence, Huddersfield couldn't mark him first half....that's tactical nous from the Dutch masters.

A long season in front of us, always difficult to get out of this League, but we have a serious management team who, I believe, will adapt and out think their opponents and install a winning mentality into the players.

Genuinely excited, and that's before Rooney arrives.

COYR?

Can't help thinking Monday's match is quite seriously affecting opinion. A poor performance and there would be lots more stressing going on.

From that one game -.Clarke seems to have answered the Tomori question.

Lawrence will step up and take Wilson's free-scoring role.

We won and still had Bielik (our biggest signing) out and he seems tailor made for where we were short last year.

We won and Shinnie, Marriott and Holmes didn't feature.

Since then we have signed Rooney who can step into Mount's shoes and Paterson can fill the gap until then.

Cocu is cool, calm and walks the walk as he seems to have bested his opponent tactically....

...so all in all...life seems good.

The team seems balanced....has options. Just wonder how it would look if Huddersfield had been on their game and thrashed us.  Hope when the inevitable defeats occur we can keep calm and not knee jerk. The squad is ok not amazing....but I just feel maybe Cocu can squeeze the maximum out of them, given time!!

I do think you have  more confidence than me in the current squad. Wilson and Mount have not been replaced, not until January anyway and despite today's signing, are two players short of an excellent team.

Cocu really needs to work his magic now - but I don't see opposition teams being scared at our offensive threat. I dont see enough goals yet so won't be surprised to see him find a way to play Jack and Waggy but not in the short term.

Creative attacking centre mids are few a penny - I'd struggle to name you a handful like Mount in the top two leagues. I'm just surprised Cocu didn't go into Europe earlier to recruit.

We need to forget about Mount and Wilson.

Not every season is the same, and not every team and not every player will perform to the exact same level. Some will stay the same, some will improve, some will dip. That’s the beauty of everyone starting on zero.

The squad is what it is. Getting recruitment right during a transfer window requires months of planning and preparation.

Cocu had several weeks.

He was never going to be able to address every weakness and plug every hole in the squad in such a short space of time.

Am I happy with every signing? No. Could we have utilised our resources better? Yes. Did we panic and react to mounting concerns over lack of signings? Possibly. Could we have let cooler heads prevail and walked away from some deals? Absolutely.

But for me, Cocu is the best signing we have made. If he is as good as his reputation suggests, we are in safe hands and can look forward to an exciting season, even if the squad may not be the strongest on paper.

Decent enough squad to compete at the top end of this division if the manager and staff can get them performing to their max.

I think some people are focusing a bit too much on the fact we haven't replaced the undoubted quality of Mount & Wilson like-for-like.

However as Sheff Utd showed last season, a top team isn't all about about having the most outstanding players it's about have a team that gels together as a winning machine.

For all the highlights last season we did finish 6th with less points than Gary Rowett's team, let's not forget that.

I can't help but feel that the Bielik signing will prove to be a masterstroke and we'll ultimately end up with a higher points total this season than last.
