Derby County have today agreed terms with defender Gareth Roberts.

Experienced left-back Roberts has agreed to join the Rams on a two-year deal from Derby's Championship rivals Doncaster Rovers, effective from 1 July 2010.

The 32-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract with Doncaster in order to join Nigel Clough's side.

After confirming Jay McEveley's departure last week, Clough stated he was eager to recruit an experienced left-back to work alongside promising youngster Dean Moxey.

Clough told dcfc.co.uk: "Gareth is an accomplished and steady defender at Championship level and we're really pleased he has chosen to join us.

"Gareth has been on our targets list for quite some time and we have watched him on a number of occasions over the past few months.

"When we released Jay we talked about getting some consistency in the left-back position and we believe Gareth is someone that can bring that.

"He is a vastly experienced player and Dean Moxey will also be able to learn a great deal off him."

A former Liverpool trainee, Roberts made his senior debut in professional football with Greek side Panionios in 1999.

After his short stint abroad he returned to Merseyside by joining Tranmere Rovers, whom he represented between 1999 and 2006 where he made over 250 appearances.

During that time, Roberts also received international honours by appearing for Wales.

He joined Doncaster in 2006 and was a key member of the side that miraculously risen from the Conference to establishing themselves as a Championship side.
