All we have to do is not get out. We could score 1 run tomorrow, and still draw. At first my flawed maths thought that would mean Australia automatically retain. But that would make it 1-1 with 1 to play. I think i’m starting to get this now. So we’re not necessarily hoping for stokes to pull another miracle out of the bag tomorrow, just that we don’t get out. And that plan has already gone tits up. At least we dropped Roy down the order so he doesn't do anything daft in the first few overs. So far it's working.
mozza
It's gonna take more than Ben Stokes to save us this time, what's the forecast for the next 20minutes?

Big ask tomorrow, I think they'll lose but if they dig in until tea it could get tense and come down to Stokes again. I'm still not convinced about Root as captain, but being captain has trashed his batting form. Was a good ball mind.

It seems to be an English trait to just give the captaincy to the best batsman and then watch their form tail off. We have a chance to save the game, albeit it a very slim one, and will require something we've not seen all series from the likes of Denly, Roy, Bairstow & Buttler. I've got no issue with how we've played this game, at least we've tried to dig in, but can accept that this formidable Aussie attack was always going to be difficult to cope with. Our bowlers have been good too, it's Smith that has been the substantial difference between the two teams.

Or if there's heavy cloud cover and one of us was to happen to pull the cables out of the floodlights.

RadioactiveWaste
resisted well for the first hour but Roy's just been bowled. Stokes walks out with another long day to save england ahead.
RadioactiveWaste
Stokes gone. Walked. Knew he nicked it. Rugby world cup anyone?

RadioactiveWaste
166-6 at tea. England putting up a fight with Buttler and Overton in. 36 overs to go and the tail not the most stubborn England have ever had against aussie bowling and the second new ball when it comes. Archer and broard can hold a bat and we know Jack Leach can polish his glasses. If they make it it'll have been a fine effort. However I expect Australia will find a way through once they break this partnership. And we'll have to admit Australia have been the better side throughout the series - without Smith it would've been more even, but the match Smith didn't play was a once in lifetime against all odds last wicket stand. RadioactiveWaste
All over. At least England fought a bit more than the first test getting to the last 14 overs. Australia retain the Ashes, lead the series 2-1 with one to play. A Win at the Oval from England would draw the series at least. Overall I think Australia have been better in the series and I think we need to find a new test captain for the winter and let Root concentrate on batting. rynny
I'm not convinced by Denly. Personally would rather have someone younger in that can grow into the role, even tempted to leave Roy there.

OK, a ragin aussie ashes side isn't the easiest introduction, but he's made naff all. I'd take captaincy off root and make him open with burns. He's out there quick enough anyway. I think if we give Roy a little time to bed himself in he could prove to be a good red ball player. The question of changing a captaincy is something I've seen a lot this summer (and previously) but the real question is who do we give it to?
