Man City could face a Uefa ban from Champions League for a season

Uefa investigators want Manchester City to be banned from the Champions League for a season if they are found guilty of breaking financial rules.

However, according to one well-placed source, a final decision is yet to be made by chief investigator Yves Leterme.

The former Belgian prime minister, chairman of the investigatory panel of Uefa's independent financial control board, is set to make a recommendation this week.

With no vote in such cases, the final say lies with him but several of his colleagues are understood to have firmly expressed the view at a recent meeting that a season-long ban would be a suitable punishment if City are found guilty.

I think this ban will be enforced and I’ll tell you why.

UEFA won’t want England to dominate Europe, 4 English clubs in both European finals will not go down well at UEFA HQ as they will be under pressure from clubs and leagues across Europe to keep the competition fair.

With the Premier League TV deals, it’s only going to get stronger creating a gap between our clubs and the rest of Europe.

La Liga themselves have already started pointing fingers at the big spenders, despite Spurs not spending a penny 4 English clubs will be too much to take.

Man City out of Europe for a season will be bad news for the rest of the Premier League though, with that being their sole focus I expect they will smash it and break records, not just spending records.

Not expecting the ban anytime soon though as their lawyers will tie it up in lengthy court cases, appeal everything, same way Chelsea will do with the transfer ban.

At the same time, they might be reluctant to ban them, as it could nudge top clubs (specifically English) one step closer to creating a new European Competition/League

Is that coming from Barcelona, who are 4th on the list of biggest spenders in the last 5 years ?

(although to be fair both Manchester clubs occupy 1st and 2nd spots and have spent double)

Barça might not complain directly, but the La Liga will

There's no chance Man City spent that much and didn't break rules.

Hard to believe Man Utd didn't break rules either, but they've managed to get worse so maybe they'll see leniency.

Chelsea and Liverpool seem very much on the level with every other major european club.

Maybe La Liga should have made efforts to do something about the monopolisation of the league by Barca and Real Madrid. If the league was more competitive, the audience would be larger, and TV companies would spend more for the rights. It's pretty simple.

Man Utd felt guilty and banned themselves for a year

They have made efforts to do just that. Since the 2016/2017 season I believe, the TV money is no longer negotiated by each individual club but by the league as a whole and distributed among them, as a result the teams outside the big 2/3 are receiving a larger proportion than they did before.

As Real Madrid and Barca insisted that they couldn't receive less TV money in total than they had received prior to this new arrangement, LaLiga is still giving them the lion's share, however as the TV deals will increase in size, their ability to make it and even more level playing field will increase and that appears to be their clear intention at this point.
